Week 3: Hudson Catholic vs. Irvington Key Offensive Performances

Taj White

These were the key offensives performances for both teams; as Irvington defeated Hudson Catholic in OT 26-32. Kyshir Desir RB, Irvington This young man was clearly the player of the game. They gave the ball to him early and often and he delivered. Dominating on zone and gap runs. Showing that excellent burst needed to be great HB ripping off seven runs of 10+ yards or more. Specifically what stood out about his performance is his forced missed tackles. This young knows man how to use his natural leverage and posses great balance that aided him in creating over 10 forced missed tackles on his way to a dominating performance on the ground. Saquan Gordon QB, Irvington As a dual-threat QB, his skills were on full display. Throwing for 3 touchdowns and rushing for another. He took solid command of this offense and got the ball into the hands of his playmakers. This was a tightly contested game all the way through and despite facing immense pressure he stood in the fire time after time and made solid decisions. Indicative of his 31 yards touchdown pass to Zaheem Crawford to tie the game 26-26. Physical traits often get more hype over intangibles, and Saquan Gordon showed that his decision-making won’t waver in high-pressure situations.

Varsity football score update:
Hudson Catholic-26 Irvington-26 1:30 left in the 4th quarter S. Gordon connects with Z. Crawford for the TD. EP is no good. pic.twitter.com/BHgeLayNWe — Irvington Athletics (@irvblueknights) September 18, 2021
Nasir Addison WR, Irvington Addison’s attention to detail was the highlight of this performance. A lot of his damage was done in the first half as he lined up all over the field utilizing ghost motions and screen passes to make his impact. He took one of his screen passes 63 yards for a touchdown. The way he caught that screen pass was what stood out to me. One of the most cringe-worthy sights of wide receiver play is when players catch every pass with their bodies. Although, there are appropriate times when catching with your body is needed; this screen pass was thrown upfield by the QB and Addison caught it with his hands, not letting it get into his body allowing the grunt of the play to be made after catch ultimately leading to a touchdown. Caught any differently it would have allowed a defender to make a play on the ball and be the difference between a 5-yard loss and a 63-yard touchdown. [player_tooltip player_id="146668" first="Famah" last="Toure"] WR, Irvington [player_tooltip player_id="146668" first="Famah" last="Toure"] gave Irvington their first score of the second half. Taking a screen pass 68 yards for a touchdown. At 6’4 200lbs he showed not only can he be physical after the catch but he has the speed and explosiveness to take it to the house from anywhere on the field. He also showed no matter what type of passes come his way he has the body control and catch radius to adjust to any level throw.

@1kFamah took that thang to the house from very high throw. Thats where catch radius and a big frame allow QBs room for error @irvblueknights
— EJ Daniels (@edaniels77) September 18, 2021
[player_tooltip player_id="107408" first="Taj" last="White"] OT, Hudson Catholic This young man was the anchor that led Hudson Catholic’s dominant rushing attack. He was very dominant with his run blocking. Specifically, what stood it is his blocking second level against LB. As a former OL, it’s rarely emphasized and discussed how important second-level blocking is and tough it is for tackles his size to not only square up and lock on to moving targets but maintain the necessary pad level to deliver an effective block. Hudson Catholic ripped off many big runs in this game and [player_tooltip player_id="107408" first="Taj" last="White"]’s second-level blocking was a key reason why. Jacob Rodriguez RB, Hudson Catholic Physicality is this young man game and it seemed like it took more than one defender literally every time he touched the ball to take him down. He rushed for 3 touchdowns and had one costly fumble. Overall, he also had a gaudy rushing performance rushing 23 times for 80 yards showing good burst, thrived on gap run schemes, and converted all of his red-zone opportunities. His balance and strength in this game led to impressive performance specifically with YAC.

1/3 of them pic.twitter.com/jadTtiFab0
— Jacob Rodriguez (@Jayrod3434) September 19, 2021
