Players emerge and make leaps on a weekly basis. Learn about some of Iowa’s newcomers and find out whose stock is rising below. Ten noteworthy week 3 performances are broken down that earned these athletes some well-deserved recognition. Get to know them now. Brenden Linde, TE, Kennedy, Twitter Linde blew up in a huge week 3 performance that saw him haul in 7 receptions for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns in a dismantling of Washington. He had been quiet on the year up until now, but has erupted onto the scene and at 6’4 200 lbs one has to think the recruiting world is going to take notice. The track star was talked into coming out for football in the offseason and he’s got to be happy with his decision. His first touchdown came on a deep drag; Washington’s safety tried to cover him, but couldn’t keep up and Linde strode right into the end zone. Trevon Smith, WR, Algona, Twitter Algona is rolling so far this year and Smith has emerged as the top target in an offense that is averaging nearly 40 points and 400 yards of offense per game. Smith has pitched in 369 total yards and 8 total touchdowns. His most recent game against Garner Hayfield Ventura was a display of sheer dominance as he caught 7 passes for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith is a gifted route runner who is fearless over the middle and really tough after the catch. One of his week 3 scores was earned the hard way, breaking two tackles and diving into the end zone. Addison Binnie, WR, Clinton, Twitter Binnie has been a bright spot for the River Kings despite an 0-3 start hauling in 4 touchdown receptions, taking carries, playing defense, and returning kicks. He is only a junior and flashes elite athleticism that would appear to transfer nicely to the next level as a skilled player. Binnie ran a terrific post pattern in Cinton’s most recent game against Central Dewitt. He beat his opponent off the line, gained quick separation, called for the ball, made a highly athletic leaping grab over the defender, and managed to touch both feet down in the back of the end zone. [player_tooltip player_id="98644" first="Carson" last="Toebe"], QB, Clear Lake, Twitter The Lions are off to a 1-2 start, but Toebe’s production has been high and he looks impressive commanding his offense. He has thrown for 609 yards, rushed for 314 yards, and has found the end zone 10 total times. Toebe, often playing from behind, has had to throw the ball a lot. He looks very poised and comfortable in the pocket, especially when making his initial reads on play-action. Toebe has shown off impressive arm strength on downfield throws and throws into tight windows so far this year. It is clear he has all the measurables and a vast skillset. Darren Richardson, RB, Iowa City High, Twitter Richardson shouldn’t be overlooked in a backfield that has no shortage of capable athletes. He has amassed 237 yards and 5 touchdowns on just 21 carries through three games. 130 yards and 3 touchdowns came in week 3 against Ames. He ran hard, ran angry, and could not be stopped. His first score came early on from short yardage as he blasted through two defenders into the end zone. Then the flood gates opened: Richardson scored from 29 and 76 behind base blocking. He plowed through the box on both plays overpowering defenders into daylight. [player_tooltip player_id="23968" first="Noah" last="Storts"], DE, Decorah, Twitter Storts has been a monster for Decorah and a lot of schools should be taking a serious look at him. He has 14.5 tackles, 5 sacks, and 6 tackles for loss through three weeks at Defensive End. Storts shows a high propensity for recognizing blocks within a step and knows how to attack, which is why he is in the backfield making plays so often. His natural bend is impressive and he gets into it as soon as he beats hands against a pass set. Storts has been so disruptive and finds ways to impact a play every down. He is also one heck of a Fullback/Tight End. [player_tooltip player_id="148776" first="Evan" last="Forker"], DE, Bettendorf, Twitter Bettendorf has had their hands full against two top offenses in Kennedy and Urbandale, but their defense has performed well and Forker is a big part of that. He has 16.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 4.5 tackles for loss through three weeks. Forker has shown in those games that he is a disciplined edge defender who takes his gap with square shoulders and active feet. He made a terrific play against Muscatine following pullers flat on GT and taking the ball carrier down for a loss. He later forced a fumble by demolishing the Quarterback on speed option. Seth Hermanson, DE, Lake Mills, Twitter Hermanson has been a bright spot for the 1-2 Bulldogs who just couldn’t get it going against West Hancock in week 3. He has 19.5 tackles, 8 sacks, and 11.5 tackles for loss so far on the year. He has lined up on inside gaps, the edge, and as a stand up rusher; Hermanson has excelled in each role. He has a rapid get off and defeats blocks through his gap with a variety of techniques. Hermanson can get hands on or use jab steps to take advantage of slower opponents. He had a terrific speed rush and blew right by a Tackle for a sack on Friday. Ryker Stelling, LB, Kennedy, Twitter Stelling contributed 6 tackles towards a defensive performance that held Washington to just 185 total yards of offense in week 3; he leads Kennedy with 24 tackles so far on the year. Just a junior, Stelling is excelling as a Middle Linebacker against the run and in coverage. He had several big plays on Friday. One was a pass deflection that resulted in an interception; Stelling got to the hook/curl and under the route perfectly. He also ran down a bubble from the other side of the field for a tackle and stuffed his gap on a 4th and short attempt for another. Brecken Schossow, S, Sioux City East, Twitter The Black Raiders have allowed 20 points through three contests and Schossow is a big reason why with 17 tackles. He can play both Strong Safety and Outside Linebacker and is one of the better and more physical tacklers you will see on film. He folds back inside and sets an edge with authority to make plays. Schossow has also proven to be quite the offensive weapon. On just 2 receptions and 6 carries he has 152 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Schossow, at a filled out 6’1, should see his stock rise with great measurables and an outstanding body of work.
