These rankings are based on high school position and production, not college projection, so the slimmer Atunku makes the list on the interior. Cary plays a ton of 3-4 and 3-3-5 looks, matching Atunku up against both guards anad tackles. His strength at 220 is impressive and he can not only crash gaps, but also hold off bigger linemen. His turnover production is impressive, and he’s a force when he gets in the backfield.

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that Atunku will rise in the rankings in the future, as I’mjust not quite sure whether to rank him as an interior or edge defender. He’ll line up at either, and his athletic profile is unique. He’s an elite field athlete in the throwing disciplines, and that explosive strength pops on film. Basically, once we know how he develops physically, we’ll know which position he’ll play in college, and we’ll have a better idea of exactly where to rank him in the context of the class as a whole.

Likely a future edge rusher, Atunku has thrived all along the defensive line this season. He’s a high-motor defender who loves to hit and isn’t afraid to mix it up in the running game. That being said, he length works as a pass-rusher. He’s been a huge part of Cary’s historic season.
