We continue our spotlight on rising defensive backs in Illinois' 2027 class. These five prospects are building momentum with their playmaking ability, physicality, and upside.   [player_tooltip player_id='1631457' first='Rontez' last='Smith'] – CB – Bradley-Bourbannais Smith is a twitchy cornerback with excellent footwork. At 5'9, 160 pounds, he mirrors receivers well and shows confidence in man coverage. His competitive nature and instincts give him an edge at the position.   Daniel Broomfield – CB – Schaumburg Broomfield is a long and athletic corner at 6'0, 180 pounds. He moves well for his size and has the strength to battle with bigger receivers. With continued refinement in coverage technique, Broomfield has the potential to develop into a true boundary corner.   Eric Hecker – CB – Wheaton Warrenville South Hecker plays with good anticipation and toughness. At 5'10, 160 pounds, he breaks on the ball well and isn't afraid to get physical in the run game. His versatility and steady play give him value in multiple coverage schemes.   [player_tooltip player_id='811647' first='Jake' last='Thies'] – SS – Fenwick Thies brings a physical presence to the strong safety spot. At 5'11, 185 pounds, he plays downhill and isn't afraid to mix it up at the line of scrimmage. He has a linebacker's mentality in the secondary and shows leadership qualities already.   Liam Wozniak – CB – Vernon Hills Wozniak is a technically sound corner with good size at 5'11, 160 pounds. He stays patient in coverage and has a knack for getting his hands on passes. Wozniak is an under-the-radar prospect with the potential to grow into a standout.
