Three teams — each headlined by at least one high-profile prospect — seemed to loom the largest in the host Broncos and visiting Madison Prep and Istrouma.
But, for all the eyes on those heavily recruited stars, each roster featured some intriguing less-heralded prospects who could currently be steals for colleges who take a closer look.
Here were a few of note.
Kameran Senegal Kameran Senegal 5'9" | 160 lbs | WR Zachary | 2022 State LA — 5-9, 160 WR — Zachary (2022),
Tylon Williams Tylon Williams 5'9" | 150 lbs | WR Zachary | 2023 State LA — 5-10, 150 WR — Zachary (2023)
and the Broncos’ deep wide-receiving corps
The veteran leader of the pack here is rising senior Charles Robertson Charles Robertson 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Zachary | 2022 State LA , who holds a slew of offers from around the region. But, man, will 2023 Texas A&M quarterback commitment Eli Holstein Eli Holstein 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Zachary | 2023 State LA have his share of options all over the field this fall. Rising sophomore Luke Wisham Luke Wisham 6'2" | 170 lbs | ATH Zachary | 2024 State LA picked up a Tulane offer this summer to kick off his recruitment. And a pair of smaller, but extremely quick weapons in Senegal and Williams figure to give opponents fits all fall for a receiving corps with six- or seven-deep talent that will be the envy of most the state. The only offer between the two so far is Louisiana College for the rising senior Senegal.
Carlton Johnson II — 5-10, 160 DB — Zachary (2022)
and Cody Smith Cody Smith 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Zachary | 2023 State LA — 6-2, 180 DB — Zachary (2023)
On the other side of the field, Kylin Jackson Kylin Jackson 6'3" | 195 lbs | DB Zachary | 2023 State LA is the big name for the Broncos’ defense, but the 2023 safety is far from alone on a unit that should pair enough playmaking ability to the high-powered offense to keep the team among the top contenders for a Class 5A state championship. If opponents attempt to steer away from Jackson in the passing game, Johnson and Smith are among the teammates more than capable of stepping up with opportunistic takeaways, as they showed throughout this summer.
De’Antwon Brown — 6-5, 180 WR — Istrouma (2022)
Running back Le’Veon Moss Le’Veon Moss 5'11" | 200 lbs | RB Istrouma | 2022 State LA is the understandable center of attention for Istrouma and looked good working as a receiver out of the backfield — and even garnered a few snaps working at cornerback along the way. But his fellow rising senior had another strong showing to cap a strong summer. Brown is a long, lean athlete with more of a basketball background, who looks comfortable and confident on the football field not only as a natural target capable of stretching the field and using his frame to his advantage against shorter defenders, but also as an aggressive and vocal leader in just his second year on the team.
David Jones David Jones 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Madison Prep | 2023 State LA — 5-11, 185 DB — Madison Prep (2023)
The Chargers’ highest-ranked prospect, huge defensive end Quency Wiggins Quency Wiggins 6'7" | 270 lbs | DL Madison Prep | 2022 State LA , was on hand to support his teammates despite not being a 7-on-7 player. On the field, quarterback Zeon Chriss Zeon Chriss 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Madison Prep Academy | 2022 State LA , the reigning Outstanding Player in the Class 3A state championship game and eventual Louisiana (Lafayette) commitment, generated the most media attention. But one of that senior duo’s younger teammates, defensive back David Jones David Jones 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Madison Prep | 2023 State LA , continues to look poised for a breakout junior season. New Memphis freshman Tyrell Raby Tyrell Raby 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB Madison Prep | 2021 State LA has touted the athletic 2023 prospect as the next man up. And, in addition to Jones’ typically stingy defensive work at corner, he also stepped up among Madison Prep’s top downfield weapons on offense in a fashion that would make Raby proud of his two-way ability. ULM is the only program to extend a scholarship offer thus far.
