Sights and Sounds: ENMU Camp at Cleveland HS

Led by new head coach Tye Hiatt, Eastern New Mexico conducted a successful three-hour football camp Tuesday night at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho with nearly 100 players participating. Beginning with Hiatt’s predecessor, Kelley Lee, ENMU has made recruiting the state of New Mexico a priority, and that’s reflected by the high number of in-state players on the Greyhounds roster. They signed about a dozen NM prospects in February. “There was a lot of talent out here and they worked extremely hard,” Hiatt told Prep Redzone New Mexico at the conclusion of the camp. “One of the things you see with New Mexico kids is they’re going to give everything they have. They did a great job. They worked their tails off. Our coaching staff was proud of the effort they gave.” Hiatt was seen talking with several prospects during and after the camp. “It began with our previous coaches,” Hiatt said. “We have to do a great job in-state. The type of kids we’re going to get are going to fit exactly who we are with the discipline, toughness, commitment to the team. A lot of these kids fit who we are as a program.” ENMU held one camp in the state this year largely because Hiatt has been busy with summer workouts and putting together a coaching staff. Next year and beyond, the Greyhounds could increase the number of in-state camps. Because Cleveland head coach Heath Ridenour is a ENMU alum, the Greyhounds will likely hold a camp there annually as long as he remains the head coach of the Storm. “The plan for next May and June is to make a circuit so we can travel to see all the players in the state,” Hiatt said. “We want to make sure we see everybody in the state.” The most pleasant surprise of Tuesday’s camp might have been former Centennial WR <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26175" first="Isaac" last="Gutierrez"]</strong>. Barely recruited when he was starring for the Hawks, Gutierrez ran the fastest 40 of the night: 4.48 seconds. He was followed by Santa Fe 2022 RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26265" first="Martell" last="Mora"]</strong> (4.49) and Cleveland QB/WR <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="139521" first="Evan" last="Wysong"]</strong> (4.53, 1/100^th of a second behind his PR of 4.52 seconds at Texas Tech camp in June). The roster of quarterbacks attending the camp included Wysong (competing for the Storm starting job), Raton QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26234" first="Dylan" last="Quartieri"]</strong>, NMMI QB <strong>Gage Guardiola</strong> and former Miyamura QB <strong>Cael Stewart</strong>, who now attends Blue Ridge High in Arizona. The running back position was loaded with Mora, Rio Rancho’s <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26227" first="Zach" last="Vigil"]</strong>, Albuquerque High’s <strong>Andres Aguirre</strong> and Raton RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138053" first="Cayden" last="Walton"]</strong>. Aguirre’s teammate, DE <strong>Landon Williams</strong>, represented the Bulldogs on the defensive side and was seen talking with Hiatt after the camp. Williams, who earned DE MVP honors at the Stephen F.
