The high school season is fast approaching. Teams from all over the state are wrapping up their dead periods and getting ready to put on full pads again. Football is almost back!
Entering the 2021 season, PrepRedzone Mississippi wants to cover as many teams in the state as possible. From outside Memphis down to the coast, we want to give you the scoop of everybody in Mississippi.
Kicking things off, we will be starting in Southaven, MS at Southaven High.
OVERVIEW
After a disappointing 4-5 record last season, the Southaven Chargers are looking to reload and bounce back this season. Facing a COVID year like everybody else, Southaven was dropped one game due to the virus. Outside of that, scores of the games usually came down to one or two possessions outside of playing out of state Bartlett (TN).
As far as talent goes, this was a young team last year. Most of the elite playmakers were underclassmen and have since developed greatly with a ton of time in the weight room. Key departures include star wide receiver and Oregon signee Isaiah Brevard. Brevard was one of the best playmakers in the entire state last season, and replacing him will be close to impossible. Talents like him only come around every once in a while. Senior quarterback Jordan Hibbler also graduated this past spring, leaving the job open to a rising underclassman. Southaven graduates two senior running backs as well.
Fortunately for the offense, this defense is absolutely LOADED with returning talents. Anchoring the defensive line, rising senior defensive lineman Aaron Bryant Aaron Bryant 6'4" | 300 lbs | DL Southaven | 2022 State MS is positioned for a huge final year. The 6’3″ 300 pound interior player wrecked havoc in the spring game and is known as one of the best players in the entire state of Mississippi. Bryant lists offers from LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Alabama among many. Behind him in the secondary is 2023 ATH John Slaughter John Slaughter 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Southaven | 2023 State MS . Slaughter has been one of the biggest risers in recruiting circles since the camp season kicked off. A versatile playmaker, Slaughter can bait quarterbacks into interceptions just as easy as he can lay out a ball carrier in the open field. He holds offers from Ole Miss, Arkansas State, and Tennessee among several.
6A football is tough, but this is a team that will surprise many after a few down years. Southaven could have one of the best and most complete defenses in the entire state, and it could easily keep them in some games they shouldn’t be favored in.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Dillon Williams | 2022 DB
A physical enforcer in the secondary, Williams is a key member of the defense for Southaven. He has great size at 6’1″ 195 and has the intensity that lots of linebackers play with. Last season, he lined up at corner and at nickel and played his best ball closer to the line of scrimmage. This is a defensive back that embraces press coverage and loves coming up to make a big time tackle. Williams has really impressive speed and hips when he has to transition. Listing offers from Southeast Missouri State, Central Arkansas, and Austin Peay, look for Williams to blow up after a big time senior campaign.
Tramail Howard | 2022 OL
Starting at right guard last season, Tramail Howard pathed the way for an efficient rushing attack at Southaven. The 6’1″ 310 OL plays with great aggression and a tremendous chip on his shoulder. Howard bends well in his stance and plays fast in space. What stands out most about him is his upper body strength. Howard can punish any defender that gets in his pathway. As a pass protector, he plays with a powerful base and doesn’t get pushed over easily. Look for him to lead the offensive line as a senior this season.
Aquarius Winston Jr | 2022 DB
A 6’2″ defensive back, Winston has been a player we have recently discovered here at PrepRedzone. This guy has a great nose for the football and covers a ton of ground with ease. Winston is also a violent tackler and delivers some big time hits to players all around. Against the pass, he can turn his hips and run with any receiver in 6A. Winston’s best ball is against the run. He is just one of those natural strong safety types that doesn’t fear anything. He currently lists an offer from Southeast Missouri State.
MORE NAMES
JaKylan Robinzine | 2022 QB
Played well in the spring game. Looks like the front runner for the starting QB job.
Omarion Johnson | 2023 WR
Impressive playmaker as a sophomore. Flashed in the spring; very quick twitched in the open field.
Dante Ellington | 2022 LB
Inside linebacker who could also play running back. Great instincts.
GAMES TO WATCH
9/10 Lafayette (AWAY) – Two of the best defenses in North Mississippi will be facing off early in the season. The amount of talent on both these defenses is unreal. Expecting this game to be low scoring, but exciting for those who love a good hard fought battle.
10/1 Hernando (HOME) – Big time district game. Last year, Southaven held Hernando to 12 total points, but failed to score on offense. Hernando QB Zach Wilcke Zach Wilcke 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Hernando | 2022 State MS will have quite the matchup against the talented secondary full of Division 1 prospects at Southaven.
11/5 Horn Lake (HOME) – This game was tied up at half 7-7 last season, and then came down to the wire in the fourth quarter. Horn Lake is always the team to beat in 6A, and Southaven has every ability to take down the annual juggernaut at home in the last game of the season.
