On June 26th, thirty-one of Maryland’s best linemen came out to The Arena Sports Factory to compete in the first-ever Gauntlet. Created by Coach Daniel Yarborough, Defensive Line Coach at McDonogh School, The Gauntlet was developed to showcase the wide array of offensive and defensive line talent that Maryland offers. And based on what I saw, it did not disappoint. The mix of talent allowed lesser-known players to show what they could do against future D-1 level talent. After the 1-v-1 battles, the coaches got together and named their MVPs for the camp. Overall MVP Ayo Tifasi, Concordia Prep, OL/DL, 6’5" 290, 2022 Saturday was a chance to stand out, and no one did that more than Ayo. Coming into the day as a defensive lineman, Ayo made sure to get reps on both sides of the ball. This set him apart from the other players when coaches decided the camp MVP. On defense, he showed great footwork and motor from the interior position. Every snap he was constantly moving. His hands and feet never stopped, allowing him to give the offensive lineman problems. His top trait is his strength, which allows him to finish blockers no matter his hand position. On offense, his ability to recover is what stood out. Against quick rushers, Ayo's feet were quick enough to get himself back into position without any wasted motion. Versus power rushers, he was able to maintain a square position with his feet always under him. In a camp setting, Ayo did a great job of flashing the tools to become a lineman to watch going into next season. Offensive MVP Ebubedike Nnabugwu, Dunbar, OC, 6’2" 265, 2023 One player who put himself on the radar for the 2023 ranking was Ebubedike Nnabugwu. Of all the linemen he was on the smaller end, but it did not look like it when 1-v-1’s started. He showed-out during each matchup he had, with his toughest matchup coming against [player_tooltip player_id="90505" first="Kwan" last="Williams"].He shows a good ability to anchor quickly and set the pocket depth. And also possesses the strength in his lower body to maintain the anchor against larger linemen. With a full season ahead of him, Ebubedike should be seeing an increase in college interest during the fall season. Defensive MVP [player_tooltip player_id="90503" first="Daniel" last="Owens"], Calvert Hall, DE, 6’4" 240, 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="90503" first="Daniel" last="Owens"] was one of the more high-profile players during Saturday’s camp, and he did not disappoint. His pass-rush ability off the edge made him a nightmare for each OT he faced during the camp. Owens pairs great athleticism with patience when rushing the passer. He did a great job with using his leverage when attacking the edge of the OT. And, with his later reps, he showed an inside counter move that the OTs struggled to adjust. After watching him in person on Saturday, it is easy to see why Owens already has multiple FBS offers.
