So fast, in fact, he’ll be competing for the Storm in several running events (plus the long jump) at next week’s Class 5A state track and field meet at UNM’s complex in Albuquerque.
Evan recently ran the 40 in 4.52 seconds at a Texas Tech camp.
In many ways, though, that’s where the similarities between Evan and his brother end.
So, if you’re looking for Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM to morph into Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM 2.0 when the 2021 season gets underway in mid-August, you’re probably going to be disappointed.
First, they play different positions. Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM was a standout wide receiver and defensive back for Cleveland. He capped his prep career in early April with a sensational five-touchdown performance against La Cruces at UNM’s stadium, his future home.
Evan, on the other hand, is competing for the Storm’s starting quarterback job with three other candidates in a battle that could last well into preseason camp. If he doesn’t win the job, Wysong expects to be moved to slot receiver.
Evan understands many people will inevitably compare his achievements on the gridiron to his older brother’s, who will be a freshman at UNM this fall.
“I don’t let any comparisons between me and my brother go to my head.” Evan told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I let them go in one ear and out the other because I know we play different positions and we’re both living different lives.
“I’m not trying to work around the idea of ‘ Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM ’, I’m going to work through it.”
Any sign of a sibling rivalry between the Wysong brothers is difficult to unearth because they’re helping each other prepare for the upcoming football season.
“I don’t think there’s any sort of rivalry between me and Luke,” Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM said. “Luke pushes me to the point where he gets mad at me because he knows how much potential I hold. We are always working together to improve each other. We go to Cleveland at night and throw the ball to each other.”
Right now Evan is focused entirely on winning the Storm starting QB job.
“I’ve been working really hard with all my receivers these past couple of weeks getting our timing down and building a strong relationship so we can perform,” Evan said. “I also have been working extremely hard in the gym, pushing myself to finishing every rep, and eating to gain weight and making sure the weight room pays off.
“The competition will be decided by who works the hardest and preforms the best.”
Cleveland coach Heath Ridenour told Prep Redzone New Mexico in late April that regardless of who wins the QB job, the Storm offense “will be in great hands.” Cleveland enjoyed myriad weapons on offense this past spring, from quarterback Jeff Davison Jeff Davison 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2021 State NM to Fresno State-bound Tre Watson Tre Watson 6'5" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM to Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM and others.
The Storm offense seemingly raced up and down the field at will en route to scoring 179 points in four games against quality opponents Clovis, Centennial, Rio Rancho and Las Cruces.
Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM believes the Cleveland offense won’t experience a significant drop-off, if at all. Assuring there won’t be a drop-off is what the ongoing summer workouts are all about.
“I have very high expectations for myself and Cleveland’s offense this year,” Wysong said. “I hold myself to a high standard, and I’m going to hold my offense to a high standard as well during practice and in games. This spring we had a very talented team.
“But I look at our team this year and see the same thing. I look around the weight room in the mornings and see dudes on offense like Nic Trujillo Nic Trujillo 6'1" | 160 lbs | WR Cleveland | 2023 State NM , CJ Muños, Sawyer Jones, and Charles Sanchez all getting after it. I truly believe once we come together as a team we are going to be just as good as last year’s team.”
After earlier attending Texas Tech’s camp in Lubbock, Evan will compete at the Eastern New Mexico camp at Cleveland High School on July 20.
Preseason camp for the 2021 season is scheduled to begin Aug. 2. Cleveland’s first game is Sat., Aug. 21 against Centennial at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.
Thank you @TexasTechFB for hosting an amazing camp today and allowing me to compete! 🙌🏼
