With only the Paradise Camp left on the June schedule, University of Miami head coach Manny Diaz welcomed the final group of campers on campus Wednesday morning – and the talent that attended was indeed eye-catching. From as close as Coral Gables and as far away as the state of Washington and Georgia, youth and high school football talent had the chance to learn and compete as coaches and current UM players – including standout QB D’Eriq King – helped out – some impressive talent were ready to impress. With June being the month for the athletes nationwide to finally showcase their skills, camps like the one that Diaz and his staff have put on have really benefited many prospects, who were on the fence. The camps also brought talent to Coral Gables as Miami is in the midst of getting the Class of 2022 secured so they can move on to the 2023 and 2024 classes. On Wednesday, several athletes were out to make a statement, and five prospects did just that. Here are five eye-catchers: 2022 - [player_tooltip player_id="50013" first="Maurice" last="Jones"], RB, 5-9, 190, Miami Killian. This Marshall University commitment began his career at Coral Gables before moving over and playing for the Cougars this past pandemic season. His explosion at the line of scrimmage coupled with his ability to run back kicks certainly makes him someone who will get on that field in Huntington. AT THE CAMP: Every drill he took part in, his burst of speed showed as well as his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Certainly attracted plenty of attention. TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11201958/Maurice-Jones 2022 – Trey Lathan, S/LB, 6-2, 205, Miami Gulliver Prep. One of the more versatile football prospects in south Florida, this safety, linebacker, receiver and just about anything else you want him to play is indeed someone you want on your roster. Explosive player, who gets what it takes to make an impact on whatever school he lands at. AT THE CAMP: Worked as hard as anyone, performing drills, dropping into coverage and being tested for his agility on moving sideline-to-sideline as well showing that he can cover as well. TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11337138/travious-trey-lathan 2022 – [player_tooltip player_id="50066" first="Elijah" last="McCantos"], CB, 6-0, 185, Miami Edison. Here is the total package has made a lasting impression throughout the course of the year – as a student/athlete, who is a high achiever in the classroom, while giving head coach Luther Campbell and the Red Raiders a boost in the secondary as a playmaker. AT THE CAMP: The idea from this event was to see how loose his hips were, how his reaction to various balls were and to see how his speed could translate to a Power 5 game. He passed every test with coaches as well as the players who were watching. TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15268534/Elijah-McCantos 2022 – Ghana Oboh, RB, 5-11, 195, Miami Central. For the past three years, watching this gifted running back at Miami High, Edison and with the 6A state champion Rockets this past season. A big back who can run the ball inside or out – using a large frame with athletic instincts. AT THE CAMP: Any time you have a back with size and quickness, you test him against coverages on passing plays, watch what he can do as a blocker, and of course, showcasing a bruising running style that has been opened up to colleges across the country. He showed he is an agile and durable back as well. TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11584639/Ghana-Oboh 2023 – Jasiah Wagoner, CB, 6-0, 175, Spanaway, Washington. Coming 3,000 miles across the country to showcase his skills was thrilling and at the same time, a chance for this junior to show why he is a 4-star football talent that has attracted major interest from not only the west coast, but nationally as well. AT THE CAMP: In every drill and one-on-one that he was part of, this is a quality football prospect that more than held his own – showing his ability to cover and use his amazing skill to shut the receivers down. He is fast, can jump and felt right at home with the south Florida athletes – even with 90 percent humidity – making it tougher if you aren’t used to it. This young man will be one of the best in the country over the next two seasons. TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/11065848/Jasiah-Wagoner You Can Contact [player_tooltip player_id="111610" first="Larry" last="Blustein"] with prospect or team information at: Floridakids1@aol.com.
