<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>ESPANOLA</strong> – The Espanola Valley Sundevils continued their remarkable renaissance under third-year head coach Tylon Wilder with a 14-6 victory over Manzano Saturday afternoon in a Class 4A first-round playoff game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Once a downtrodden program - EVHS was combined 9-41 between 2016-21, excluding abbreviated spring season in 2021 – the Sundevils have reached the Class 4A playoff quarterfinals for the second consecutive season under Wilder.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Espanola Valley, the No. 6 seed, travels to No. 3 Taos Friday at 6 p.m. for the opportunity to square off with the Grants-St. Pius X winner in the 4A semifinals. Manzano finished its first season in Class 4A with a 5-6 record.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Saturday at sunny but chilly Sundevils Stadium, Espanola Valley did what they do best – run the football, control clock and dominate the line of scrimmage against the noticeably bigger Monarchs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Sundevils got on the board first after forcing a short Manzano punt on the Monarchs first possession. EVHS took over at the Manzano 32 and quickly drove for a short TD run by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1599942' first='Leonard' last='Martinez']</strong>, his team-leading 6^th of the season, midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Martinez began the season as the left tackle, but was moved to RB in September due to injuries. He came into Saturday's playoff game with 365 rushing yards, third most on the team. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the second quarter, Espanola Valley mounted an impressive, clock-chewing drive highlighted by a daring fake punt in their own end of the field that produced a first down and a crucial offsides call on Manzano on fourth-and-3 near the red zone.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Moments later, Espanola Valley QB <strong>Isaiah Primero</strong> powered up the middle from four yards out to give the Sundevils a 14-0 lead with just over two minutes left before halftime, and that remained the score at intermission.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Espanola Valley opened the third quarter with another impressive possession, but the nearly 8-minute drive came up empty when they were stopped on fourth down inside the 5-yard line.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>After an exchange of punts, Manzano drove for its lone points of the game on a short rushing TD by RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='854302' first='Justin' last='Duran']</strong> with 7:44 left in the fourth quarter. The PAT was blocked.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That score marked the last play run by the Manzano offense this season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Espanola Valley drained the final 7-1/2 minutes off the clock with another impressive time-consuming drive that forced Manzano to exhaust its timeouts.
