In fact, it’s entirely the opposite.
In Part 1 of a two-part series, we look at half of the 10 players who did just that. They’re all special players who have began or will begin jumping up various recruiting boards in the coming months.
Walt Waddell Walt Waddell 6'5" | 180 lbs | WR Chapman | 2022 State SC , WR, Chapman
Waddell leads off a list of big pass-catchers, and the 6-foot-5 Chapman receiver has certainly made a case for his big leap in the rankings. Last year, despite being part of one of the best receiving corps in the state, Waddell was second on the team with 29 receptions, 411 yards and four touchdowns.
Deverious Abercrombie Deverious Abercrombie 6'4" | 170 lbs | WR Wade Hampton | 2022 State SC , WR, Wade Hampton
When a player doesn’t appear that fast but is still hauling everything in, there’s usually a good reason for it. In Abercrombie’s case, it has to do with a stride that is basically traversing 5-6 feet with every step. The 6-foot-4 receiver matches that with great hands that are usually well above the defender’s head.
TJ Williams TJ Williams 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR Denmark-Olar | 2022 State SC , WR, Denmark-Olar
Williams will likely transition to the receiver position full-time at some point, but for now, getting the ball in his hands means he gets a decent amount of carries out of the backfield, as well. Williams brings that receiver quality to the running back game, as his vision is a spectacular complement to his powerful running ability.
Prometheus Franklin II Prometheus Franklin II 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Greenville | 2022 State SC , QB, Greenville
At 6-foot-3, Franklin is tall enough to see over the line, but he doesn’t rely upon that alone. He’s adept at getting out of the pocket and positioning himself to still make downfield throws. Greenville has a couple of receiving threats who can get open deep, and the quarterback makes the most of it.
Luke Bracey Luke Bracey 6'6" | 235 lbs | TE Rock Hill | 2022 State SC , TE, Rock Hill
As a defensive end, Bracey is a highly effective, two-hands down lineman who uses his 6-foot-6 height to disrupt the end of the line time and again. On offense, Bracey can be just as dominant. He is an above-average blocker who can high-point just about any pass, especially in and around the end zone.
