Class 3A Top RB Performances of Week 5

Through the first half of the 2024 season, there have already been several RBs that have amassed over 1000 yards rushing to start the year. It's been a blistering start to the season, and week 5 proved no different as several RBs dominated the ground game, tearing up defenses and pounding the rock effectively as they have been for much of the season. Today, we take a look at the top 8 RB performances from week 5 in Class 3A!    Possibly the best singular performance of any player from Iowa in week 5, the offense has mostly revolved around Weston Trapp's dominance in the run game. In the shootout win against Harlan Community, Trapp ran the ball 40 times for a staggering 447 yards and scored all 6 touchdowns for the Panthers. He also led the team with 3 catches for 15 yards. Trapp was simply unstoppable, and once he broke into the open field, Trapp was going to outrun everyone in the defense. Trapp was the key catalyst in Creston earning their first win of the season, and he should be vital in Creston's gameplan going forward this season.     Carroll had a well-rounded performance offensively in week 5, but the most impactful player by far on the offense was senior [player_tooltip player_id='1529009' first='Taidyn' last='Peterson']. Peterson finished with 252 rushing yards on 28 carries and 2 touchdowns. Peterson is a large runner, and he pounded the rock really well, taking carries up the middle and around the edges for big gains. Peterson is a difficult player to tackle when he breaks into the open, and his size could translate extremely well into the collegiate level.     [player_tooltip player_id='1238514' first='Kasen' last='Thomas'] continues to prove that he's been extremely effective as a two-way threat in the class of 2026. Thomas touched the ball just 11 times against Sioux Center, but he turned those touches into 237 yards and 3 touchdowns running. Thomas has the ability of make slight cuts and changes of direction that are timed well that catches the defender off balance, allowing him to break into the open, in which he simply outpaces his defenders once he gets into the open. Thomas has been a difference maker for Bishop-Heelan, and he should continue to entrench himself as the face of the team over the next 1.5 seasons.     Assumption claimed their first win of the 2024 season in week 5, and Ben Yeggy's performance played a huge part in securing this win. Yeggy finished the game with 200 rushing yards on just 13 carries and 3 touchdowns. Yeggy's first touchdown that came in the first quarter came on a clean juke to the outside of the edge-rusher and sprinting outside to the end zone. Yeggy has fluid movement, dangerous agility, and great speed up the middle, and he has been an underrated workhorse in Class 3A this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='1615329' first='Deacon' last='Caspers'] has been one of several RBs to surpass 1000 rushing yards already through 5 games, with 1002 to start the year. He emerged from week 5 against Algona with 189 rushing yards on 34 carries and a touchdown to help secure this feat. Caspers attacks the open lanes with aggression and he's been very solid as the go-to-guy on the offense. The Comets just give Caspers the ball and let him find the lanes and he will gain solid yardage every time. Caspers could very much find himself on our rankings by the end of this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='1403008' first='Tyson' last='O'Brien'] has also surpassed over 1000 rushing yards already through 5 games, and he delivered with another convincing performance on Friday night against Knoxville. O'Brien finished with 189 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown in the blowout win. O'Brien is a smaller back, but he's proven most effective as a scamper back, taking the ball outside the box and using his speed to make big plays, and a lot of O'Brien success on the ground against Knoxville came running around the edge. O'Brien has been the most effective ball-carrier for Atlantic's heavy-run committee this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='1403008' first='Tyson' last='O'Brien'] wasn't the only standout on Friday night for Atlantic, as Atlantic completely controlled the ground game, finishing with a shocking 530 total rushing yards on Friday night. Fullback Gavin McLaren also played a big part in the run game, finishing with 166 rushing yards on just 11 carries and 3 touchdowns, and he added a 34 yard touchdown reception in the win. McLaren has the skillset of a power runner, being utilized at both Fullback in a Strong formation, as well as lining up in shotgun. McLaren's first touchdown came off a straight run up the middle with he took 61 yards to the end zone. McLaren has 10 rushing touchdowns through 5 games and his presence in the run-game will make it extremely difficult for other teams to deal with.     [player_tooltip player_id='1361107' first='Titan' last='Schmitt'] has continued to deliver as one of the best RBs in Iowa, and en route to a strong win over Webster City in week 5, Schmitt had another excellent game. Schmitt finished with 164 yards on 19 carries and 2 touchdowns along with 2 receptions for 23 yards receiving. Schmitt's sharp cuts and his ability to change direction so effortlessly were on display as Webster City was simply unable to contain him even when he was surrounded. Schmitt should finish his senior season among the overall rushing leaders in Iowa at this pace.
