Welcome to another edition of our Statewide watch list series! Today, we’ve got four prospects you should be keeping tabs on as we head into the summer months, which includes quarterback from the Upstate who excels in making throws on the run. We’ll be releasing another edition on Friday so stay tuned! In case you missed it, here’s the last edition of the series from Friday, May 14. St. James – 2022 WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id="61073" first="Justice" last="Williams"] Twitter: @JusticeDB2022 2020 Hudl highlight film Analysis: Williams is an impact two-way player. On offense, he can make plays in space as a receiver on the jet sweep as he can outrun corners and change direction without losing ground. We were impressed with his ability to look the ball into his hands on two deep balls that we saw on film. On defense, he can make tackles in space and is solid in run support. Southside Christian – 2023 QB [player_tooltip player_id="89349" first="Ja’Corey" last="Martin"] Twitter: @Jacoreymartin1 2020 Hudl highlight film 2020 Season Stats: PASS: 59% completion %, 1,066 yards, 19 TDs RUN: 1038 yards, 15 TDs Analysis: Martin is an athletic quarterback who excels at making throws on the run. Standing at 6’0, 175 pounds, he doesn’t panic when the pressure comes and he keeps his eyes downfield. He can make throws like the deep vertical routes, out routes and routes over the middle of the field. We saw on film that he can find receivers where the void in coverage is on designed roll outs. His team won the 1A state championship while he garnered All-Region and All-State honors all while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. Sumter – 2022 QB [player_tooltip player_id="92207" first="Ryan" last="McCants"] Twitter: @RyanMccantsRyo1 2020 Hudl highlight film Analysis: McCants is athletic and dangerous in the read option game, showing off his speed. He knows how to find the grass and be patient before things open up. He showed good ball placement on one throw where the receiver could high point the ball and make the catch. He takes what the defense gives and will not force it. For example, we saw on film where he threw a short bubble screen which turned into a huge gain going down the sidelines. He is an excellent student with 3.4 core GPA. Westside – 2024 WR/S [player_tooltip player_id="139314" first="Josh" last="Williams"] Twitter: @_JoshWill3 2020 Hudl highlight film Analysis: Williams primarily played receiver as a freshman in 2020. He has good speed on vertical routes, showing that he can take the top off the defense and take it to the house. We were impressed with his ability to make catches over the middle against one-on-one coverage and adjusting to the back shoulder throw. That ability to adjust is a credit to what he does on the hardwood. He shows flashes of a player you’ll want to keep your eye on over the next few years.
