Every year, the state of Texas produces D1, D2, D3, and NAIA talent. Prospects can be found all over the Lone Star, and this year is no different. We highlighted five Dallas area prospects that are certainly worth keeping an eye on heading into their senior campaigns. Today, we are looking at five different Houston prospects that deserve some more attention. Some of these prospects hold power 5 offers, while others are flying a little bit under the radar. Nonetheless, all of these players mentioned are in store for big 2021 seasons.
[player_tooltip player_id="131362" first="Hymond" last="Drinkard"], GEORGE RANCH
[player_tooltip player_id="131362" first="Hymond" last="Drinkard"] is an underrated running back in the state of Texas. Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 180 pounds, Drinkard carries the George Ranch offense week in and week out. He possesses impressive quickness and agility, and it is evident all over his tape. https://twitter.com/grhsabc/status/1195887673963094017?s=21 Drinkard does a great job hitting the hole hard, wasting no time dancing around in the background. He sees the lane and uses his speed to get to the second level as quickly as possible. Additionally, Drinkard displays strong contact balance for a player at his size. The rising senior often breaks the first tackle and continues up field. That is demonstrated on the touchdown run in the video embedded above. Holding offers from just Texas Southern and Illinois State, Drinkard is a bit of a hidden gem in the talent-rinch state of Texas.
[player_tooltip player_id="60790" first="Dillon" last="Bell"], THE KINKAID SCHOOL
[player_tooltip player_id="60790" first="Dillon" last="Bell"] is an electric play waiting to happen. The rising senior is a threat to find the end zone each time that the football finds its way into his hands. The defense almost always pays for allowing the 6-foot-2, 205-pound pass catcher get the ball in space. Bell has totaled nearly 2,000 yards from scrimmage and scored over 30 times during his varsity career at The Kinkaid School in the Houston area. Schools such as Baylor, Michigan, and Mississippi State are among those that have extended offers to the talented wide receiver. https://twitter.com/dillonbell6_/status/1389765220168572934?s=21 [player_tooltip player_id="60790" first="Dillon" last="Bell"] is set up to finish his career on the high school level extremely strong. Bell possesses the footwork, smooth route-running, and playmaking-ability that teams covet in their wideouts.
COLLIN WRIGHT, MANVEL
Switching over to the defensive side, Collin Wright out of Manvel is next in line at a program that consistently churns out D1 talent year in and year out. Wright stars at safety in the Houston area and college programs are beginning to take notice. Standing at 6-foot and weighing in at 185 pounds, Wright made plays all over the secondary at Manvel. Wright grabbed four interceptions, made eight pass breakups, and made 59 tackles. His talent in coverage and against the run shows up on tape. https://twitter.com/collindwright1/status/1371544329181872138?s=21 Wright’s intelligence is one thing that stands out about his game. He uses his eyes to read the quarterback and the opponent that he is tasked with defending to make the play in a blink of an eye. Wright always seems to know where the ball is going before the offense does. It isn’t surprising that Duke and Stanford are two institutions interested in Wright’s talents. Displaying a smooth backpedal and fluidity in coverage, Wright has the tools to continue developing into a big time player int he secondary. Add in the fact that he is tough against the run and can lay a big hit or two, Wright is going to make a college coaching staff very happy.
[player_tooltip player_id="60720" first="Randy" last="Masters"], SHADOW CREEK
Shadow Creek has truly burst onto the Texas high school football scene in the past few seasons. From appearing in two State Title games, the Sharks have established themselves as one of the stronger programs in the Houston area. Wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="60720" first="Randy" last="Masters"] has played a big role for the Sharks since he first emerged on the varsity program. The speedy pass catcher routinely burns whatever defense that Shadow Creek lines up against on Friday nights. https://twitter.com/samspiegs/status/1251211341769117696?s=21 Masters is dangerous and electrifying after the catch, making him a desired prospect for may FBS programs. The likes of Arkansas, Baylor, and Oregon have extended scholarship offers to the two-sport athlete that also excels in track. [player_tooltip player_id="60720" first="Randy" last="Masters"] does not receive the amount of hype that many of his peers do within the state, but his talent is extremely evident every time that he steps onto the football field. Shadow Creek has a chance to make some noise in 2021, thanks in large part to having Masters on the roster.
[player_tooltip player_id="129070" first="David" last="Oke"], ALIEF HASTINGS
Back to the defensive side of the ball, we are highlighting Alief Hasting defensive [player_tooltip player_id="129070" first="David" last="Oke"]. Oke is a 6-foot-3, 235-pound end in the Houston area that has caught the attention of FBS coaching staffs around the country. Oke is a little undersized at the position compared to others, but he makes his size work. He displays a quick first step that allows him to beat his man and get into the backfield to disrupt the play. Oke shows flashes rusher the passer, but he really seems to shine against the run. He is strong when setting the edge and doesn’t often get beat to the corner. https://twitter.com/__coachrod/status/1381415676586434563?s=21 Oke fights through blockers -- sometimes even multiple -- and makes the play time and time again. He consistently displays his strength at the point of attack and often wins the one-on-one battles against the offensive lineman he is matched up against. Oke’s stock has a chance to heat up with a strong senior season. Polishing up his pass rushing ability while displaying some ability in coverage would give him the opportunity to impressive college coaches. He has some potential in a SAM linebacker role but is also talented to succeed at end, as well.
