The 2023 class is already full of players with major D1 offers including possible 5-star safety Caleb Downs Caleb Downs 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Mill Creek | 2023 State GA , CB Ethan Nation Ethan Nation 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Roswell | 2023 State GA , CB Michael Daugherty Michael Daugherty 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Grayson | 2023 State GA , and many more.
There are a few 2023 defensive backs in West Georgia who are bound for big years this year, and these particular players could start to see their stock take off sooner than later as we enter spring practice.
Kiemarrientez Robertson – Greenville
Down in the small-town of Greenville is where you’ll find one of the more underrated DBs in the area with great ball skills. Robertson has good size for a defensive back at 5-foot-11 170-pounds, but he really knows how to make a play on the football. He’s a smart defender who reads the QB well and knows how to make plays. He’s a good athlete who plays both ways, but his natural instincts in the secondary combined with his impressive ball skills should give him an opportunity to see some interest come his way. As a sophomore last season, Robertson intercepted 5 passes in 9 games. He’s a good tackler as well, but his ability to cover deep down the field and catch the football is what makes him one of the top defenders in the region. He’s a ball-hawking safety who has the chance to have a giant season as a junior this year.
Jyrine Stewart – Northside
It’s impossible to teach length, and that’s a trait that college coaches love in possible defensive backs. That’s exactly what Stewart has at 6-foot-2 175-pounds. He’s long, athletic, and he’s relentless in the secondary. He has zero fear out there and plays with a lot of physicality and toughness. He doesn’t play in a great region, but Stewart made the most of every bad play, bad throw, and bad run. He took advantage of every opportunity which turned into him making a lot of plays on the ball. He covers a ton of ground due to his overall speed and athleticism, but he’s able to break up a lot of passes due to his length and overall frame. He can knock the ball down and plays it well in the air. He’s a good tackler against the run, loves contact, and makes receivers think twice about running across the middle.
Aaron Gates Aaron Gates 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Trinity | 2023 State GA – Trinity Chrstian Academy
After helping lead his team to the 1A Private state title game, Gates is starting to climb higher and higher on college boards across the country. The Sharpsburg native does hold a few offers to date, but Gates could see his recruitment take off even more after a big junior season this fall. Gates run routes like receiver and has good size for his age at 6-foot-0 180-pounds. Gates was a playmaker on offense as he totaled over 400 receiving yards, but he’ll likely play defensive back at the next level. The West Georgia defensive back reeled in 5 interceptions last year, making him one of the bigger defensive playmakers in the area. He’s a tremendous athlete who will likely play even more on offense this fall, which could lead to some bigger offers down the road.
