10 plays.

That's what Boiling Springs head coach Matt Reel believes made the difference when reviewing the film from the 2023 season, where the Bulldogs finished 4-6 and fell to Dutch Fork in the playoffs. Now with the 2024 season on the horizon, the focus through the offseason has been focusing on finding ways to make those 10 plays and taking advantage of all opportunities.

“If we want to have the season we want to have, if we want to reach our goals we've got to find ways to beat the Byrnes, the Dormans, the Spartanburgs, the Gaffneys. We've got to find a way to beat those teams and I think we have the kids to do that. We have the staff to do that. We've just got to finish those games in those situations,” Reel said.

The Bulldogs offense returns a large nucleus of talent from 2023 including a trio of wide receivers – [player_tooltip player_id='1360379' first='Kyle' last='Patterson'] and Tristian Horsey Johnson. Graham Guest is a guy that Reel was complimentary of at the tight end position when opponents focus in on the three outside receivers. Tyrell Nesbitt, Josh Wright and Jacob Kuss will anchor things up front on the offensive line.

On defense, Sidney Smith returns on the defensive line but Reel says he will play on the offensive line in 2024. John Michael Simmons will accompany Smith on the defensive line and he told Prep Redzone SC that he has been working to notice the way opposing linemen move, play recognition and becoming more of a vocal leader.

Boiling Springs opens the 2024 season at home against Greer on August 23.

STARS SET TO SHINE

[player_tooltip player_id='1012707' first='Lincoln' last='Huskey'] QB, 2025 – Huskey (pictured above) threw for 1707 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023 and should be able to increase those numbers with the talent around him in 2024. He has an offer from Wingate University.

The senior quarterback on preparations for the 2024 season: “I've been working with my receivers, getting the timing down, working on my craft and throwing motion, footwork (and) definitely IQ too. Me and Coach (Brian) Turk (offensive coordinator) are definitely trying to get into a new offense and scheme up some of our teams.

[player_tooltip player_id='1254206' first='Javen' last='Chhim'] RB, 2025 – Chhim ran for 688 yards and one touchdown in 2023, in a season where he was hampered by injuries. Expect his numbers to increase in a big way in 2024.

[player_tooltip player_id='473009' first='Jeremiah' last='Favorite'] DB, 2025 – Favorite is the No. 2 corner currently in the PRZ Class of 2026 rankings and we wrote about him back in May. He has multiple Division 1 offers, including ECU, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion. He will wreak havoc for opposing receivers this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1036731' first='Dennis' last='Glenn Jr'] DL, 2027 – Glenn returns on the defensive line as a sophomore in 2024. Reel says he will be a big time recruit who is already receiving Division 1 interest. He has great size for being so young and can get penetration into the backfield.

FILM REVIEW

Eli Mobley WR, 2025 – Reel told us that Mobley has a big frame at around 6-foot-4, runs great routes and catches the ball well. He had 25 receptions for 424 yards and two touchdowns. He can go up and catch the ball at its highest point.

KEY LOSSES

JoJo Barrett LB – Now with Lenoir Rhyne University, Barrett was an ultimate leader for the Bulldogs who finished with All-Region honors.

Dekari Sterling WR – Sterling was a good possession receiver for the Bulldogs in 2023.

UP AND COMING POTENTIAL

[player_tooltip player_id='1592400' first='Grayson' last='Crowe'] WR, 2026 – Reel expects big things from the rising junior. He has added weight and gotten faster this summer. He plays in the slot and can help keep the offense on schedule with making catches in the quick game. He has good hands as well.

Jaiden Grate TE / H-Back, 2026 – Grate has good size and is learning a lot of new things to add to his game right now, according to Reel.

Reel calls him versatile who can play anywhere on the front seven, whether that's on the defensive line or at linebacker. His ability to get into the backfield and affect the play before it even gets going is impressive. He walked away with All-Region honors for his play in 2023.
