Memorial Day Coverage From The Captain

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>During my Memorial Day Weekend which included grilling some meat, watching major league baseball and rewatching a couple of my favorite war movies, Capt. Conan managed to add five athletes to his Coverage Club.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This group of five includes ranked members of three different classes and each has been mentioned just once or less in the past six months.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The captain hopes everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='284965' first='Parker' last='Haid'],</strong> ATH, 5'11”, 190, Burlingame, ‘25</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Haid is currently ranked No. 302 overall in the class of 2025 and has not been featured in the past six months. He is an experienced athlete who has the frame to play multiple positions. He has had a bug impact on the defensive side of the ball for Burlingame. During his junior season, he collected 34 total tackles in eight games. As a sophomore he tallied 30 tackles in 10 games. He has a total of 14 tackles for loss in those two seasons. College coaches will want to watch Haid and decide where he fits into their scheme and recruiting needs. He could play on the offensive line, defensive line, or a as a linebacker.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1214945' first='Gabe' last='Wingerd']</strong>, WR, 5'11”, 185, Lawrence, ‘25</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Wingerd is currently ranked No. 321 by Prep Redzone Kansas. He caught 28 balls in 10 games during his junior campaign. He finished off four of those receptions in the end zone and gained 503 receiving yards. His combination of plus-speed and strong hands will catch the eyes of college coaches. Lawerence has a skilled dual-threat quarterback running the Lions' offense next fall, and Wingerd will be one of his top targets.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='595720' first='Lamarcus' last='Barber']</strong>, OL, 6'2”, 275, Mill Valley, ‘26</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Barber is currently ranked in the No. 118 slot in the Kansas Class of 2026. I would not be surprised if he skyrockets up the rankings before his high school career is over. He can plan all three positions on the offensive line. He has a solid base and strong legs. He explosively gets off the ball and can get to the second blocking level. He still super young, so one large question with him is will he get any taller or bigger. Does he work harder to get stronger, faster, or both. Is current size and speed can both be increased, so he could focus on becoming a primary guard or tackle, or could be used as a depth and utility guy across the entire line.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1113457' first='Nate' last='Sims']</strong>, ATH, 6'1”, 155, Ottawa, ‘26</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Sims is one of those athletes who I wish had a larger profile online. I watched his HUDL package and was impressed with his speed and skills. Yet, there were not any public stats for the Ottawa prospect. Sims can lineup in the backfield, in the slot, or out wide. He is also a force to be reckoned with as a return man. He is also a speedster on the track, as he broke Ottawa's record in the 200 meters. He lists himself as a wideout and safety, but he has the versatility to play all over the field. Sims is currently ranked No. 138 overall by Prep Redzone.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1115960' first='Will' last='Schremmer']</strong>, QB, 6'4”, 175, St. Mary's-Colgan, ‘27</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Southeast Kansas could become a destination location to scout a future two-sport prospect at St. Mary's-Colgan. The Panthers have a long and lean athlete who will excel on the football field and basketball court. He played in seven varsity games as a freshman and rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries. Two of those carries resulted in touchdowns. He lists himself as a quarterback, center, and power forward on social media. It will be interesting to see if he grows anymore, which sport he keys in on, and what position he ends up playing on the gridiron. The one thing you can always count on with the Colgan Panthers is they build winning programs in all sports and that helps their athletes get noticed state-wide.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
