Expert Analysis
Scott Burgess | Prep Redzone Scout
McConnell is an “ATHLETE” at 6’6” that impacts as both a jumbo tight end and edge rusher. We were super impressed with his junior film on both sides of the ball. As a tight end he is a mismatch with his size and catch radius. On the edge he has burst coming around the corner to the QB. Illinois State and Minnesota have both checked in on him, but we believe more G5 programs should be throwing offers his way!

McConnell is a 6’5″ 200 pound athlete that has risen up the board on the hardwood and looks like he is primed to do more of the same on the gridiron. Elite size as a tight end being able to high point balls in the air. Excellent body control and has solft hands. Can line up on the line or split out. Physcial runner with the ball in his hands. Like him as a blocker too with his size and sound technique. Defensively he plays as an EDGE that tackles well in space and uses his length well as a pass rusher. Gets off blocks to make tackle. Also contributes on kick coverage unit. Runs very well for how big he is.

. Already 6’4, 195 lbs., McConnell primarily competed as a WR/TE, as well as an OLB, but given the size, growth potential, and on-field dynamic ability as a three-phase contributor, I just want to give him some time to settle into his body and skillset before I select one position only. McConnell earned varsity reps on special teams in 2023, and displays solid speed, physicality, and versatility that primarily contributed to the non-varsity ranks in 2023 as a freshman. The 6’4, standout took a kick back for six while showing off impressive balance and tackle-breaking ability, and shows closing speed that can help him run down loose ball carriers out to the edge and a physical tackling ability. He does a good job of shedding blocks, can use his length, quickness, strength, or pure effort to disengage from blocking attempts around the LOS, and demonstrates effective contested catch and 50/50 ball ability, as he’s strong in the air, times his jumps out well, and owns good hands. McConnell has a great chance of moving up the rankings at the time of the next update if he continues to improve, sharpen, and develop his skillset.

is a versatile standout for the Panthers, showcasing his athleticism across various positions. While excelling as an EDGE defender, he particularly shines on offense. His standout feature is his exceptional speed, which, combined with his 6’5″ frame, enables him to outrun defenders effectively. Last season offered a glimpse of his potential, and in the upcoming years, McConnell is poised to become a memorable name in the sport.
