. It started with nothing to do with his physical performance. It was how he was leading his group during the combine. Everybody in that group was hyped, cheering for each other, competing. You could feel the excitement within the group and in the middle of it was Mathews. It was a contagious energy that I had to force myself to walk away from because what I really wanted to do was follow them around. The kid clearly loves to compete and show what he can do. You can’t convince me there was anywhere else he would rather be.
Then athletically the dude was equally as impressive. He had the fastest L-Drill and triple jump of the entire camp going 6.85 seconds and 33′. He was also 3rd in the vertical with a 37.3″ jump. Johnny shined on the field during 1 on 1s as well. He is such a twitchy athlete who has the agility, quick feet, and accerlation to be able to run in his man’s hip pocket throughout a route then attack the ball at the high point. Johnny never disappoints and is a big time producer in the fall. More teams need this stud on their radars.

Johnny had one of the best overall days among any position. He tested great, balled out on the field, and the junior even participated at multiple positions. Starting with the testing, Johnny ran 4.62 in the 40, 4.12 shuttle, 7.12 L-Drill while also jumping a 10’2″ broad jump. The 5’9″ 160 lbs athlete has 10″ hands with a 6′ wingspan too. Mathews is a very twitchy athlete with outstanding burst, change of direction, and balance so that he could shine at WR and DB.
On the field, Johnny dominated out wide at WR and DB. It was great to see because during the season Johnny plays Rb for Stevens Point. He clearly has difference making versatility to offer the next level. At DB Johnny plays with natural, explosive reactive athleticism. He trusted his eyes and was able to run with receivers because of his ability to stay right in his man’s pocket all over the field. That suddenness in the open field also made him stand out at WR along with the ball skills to be a viable threat to make catches or make INTs. The junior is an athlete to get on campus this offseason. Big things ahead for him.

Johnny absolutely crushed the day. He ended up spending time at WR and DB and could have made the top performer article for either position. I elected to go with WR because Johnny made so many plays out wide and truly looked like a mismatch. Mathews was an elite tester to start the day. He ran 4.62, broad jumped 10’2″, and had a blazing 4.12 L-Drill. Mathews ability to change direction and accelerate with explosive power made him so hard to cover in the 1 on 1 battles.
Mathews has lightning quick feet and the ability to stay square over his feet and overall balanced. Those traits also allowed him to play tight man coverage. I loved the way that Johnny attacked the ball in the air too. He wouldn’t give the opponent a chance to make a play because of his aggressiveness at the catch point. Johnny was an RB MVP in the spring. Now he was shining at WR/DB. The 2026 is a quality athlete to recruit that can help in a lot of ways.

The junior RB out of Stevens Point ran wild Friday night! It didn’t matter if it was inside run, outside run, or as a receiver, Johnny was going to find his way into the open field. His vision and explosive lateral burst allowed him to make something out of nothing on multiple carries where he would make a couple defenders miss then find himself running free thanks to the space he created. Mathews read his blocks very well too. Multiple highlights show him quickly finding the lane and then his excellent acceleration would handle the rest as he burst through the hole and was off to the races from there. Johnny is also a slippery runner who was able to run through a lot of arm tackles. Not something you see from most 165 lbs runners. Check him out.

Johnny caught our eyes at one of our Prep Redzone WI Showcases this past offseason. So I’ve been hoping to see him win the starting job at Stevens Point. He has done that and he his midseason highlights show flashes of the exciting potential we saw in person this offseason. Johnny is a back that fits best as a change of pace back at the next level. One that can come in, provide a spark with his athleticism, and create big plays with the ball in his hands. Between the tackles his acceleration is clutch. When he finds the hole he is able to hit it very quickly, get through it untouched, and then show the elusive agility at the second level to make LBs miss. The junior RB also does a great job reading the defense while behind the line of scrimmage with the ball. If he sees them over pursuing he will instantly cut back, if he sees a lane open up play side he attacks it, and he has the speed to turn to when he reads that he will be able to beat pursuit to the corner. Keep an eye on the playmaker out of Stevens Point.

Johnny has been on a tear this offseason! He was arguably the best RB at the Prep Redzone WI Showcase this spring. Now he comes out to the Minnesconsin Mega Camp and again manages to catch my attention. The incoming junior is in line for a potentially big season this fall. He has the tools to do it. The 5’10” 161 lbs RB is becoming the type of mismatch you want athletes of his stature to be. Johnny posted a 34.7″ vertical, 4.6 40, 4.53 pro agility, and a 10’1″ broad jump. A broad jump that was good enough for 2nd best of the entire camp. Furthering the evidence that he is becoming a nightmare matchup for defenses, Johnny dominated in one on ones vs LBs. They simply couldn’t run with him. Especially when he went deep. The junior was able to track the ball well, avoid contact with the LB early in the route, and showed some reliable hands. Keep an eye on the junior this fall as he continues to build his game.

was a new prospect to my radar coming into the day, and he didn’t hesitate to make a name for himself. The 5’9″ 160 lbs running back made a statement with his combine performance. The Stevens Point RB finished with a 4.65 40, 4.63 shuttle, 9’8″ broad jump, and a 7.59 L Drill. Johnny was just getting started with that performance. He would go on to eventually earn one of the spots in the Best vs Best battles to end the day.
What led to the Best vs Best rep was the talent he showed as a ball carrier and as a receiver. Johnny is a shifty athlete who can quickly cover ground laterally to create separation and then he has the burst to build on that space and pull away in the open field. Johnny is blessed with balance to be able to make those jukes and instantly get back to attacking upfield. Mathews fits that role of a change of pace back and third down option that you can pair with a big back to make a dynamic one-two punch. I’m excited to see his role in Stevens Point as a junior.
