Eastern New Mexico runs a version of the triple option called the flexbone and for Hernandez, head coach Kelley Lee and the Greyhounds were a perfect fit for his skill set.

Hernandez announced his commitment to ENMU on Monday, less than a month after visiting the campus in Portales.

“Their offense really fits my style of play and I felt very comfortable with the coaching staff when I went there for a visit,” Hernandez told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “And I really liked the small campus and the training facilities. The coaching staff was very welcoming.

“I considered some other schools but ultimately Eastern felt like the right fit. Coach Kelley is a great guy to talk to.”

Hernandez rushed for 652 yards and passed for 872 yards in seven games for Centennial in 2023. He was the Hawk's quarterback for the first six games before suffering a broken collarbone.

Against eventual 6A champion La Cueva in Week 3, Hernandez rushed for 223 yards and 3 TD while passing for 131 yards and 2 TD on 10-of-14 passing to spark the Hawks' 35-28 victory at Field of Dreams. It was certainly one of the finest performances of his career.

Hernandez returned from his injury to play wide receiver in one game before Centennial was eliminated by rival Las Cruces in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs.

“I pretty much lost a whole (freshman) year due to Covid but I gave it my all the last three years,” Hernandez said. “The amazing coaching staff at Centennial pushed me to where I needed to be. I loved playing at Centennial and look forward to the future.”
