The defense takes center stage in the Week 8 edition of Game Balls in the Catawba River. An entire defensive unit stood out to us, while an offensive lineman opened up holes in the run game and a committed Division 1 running back put on a show in a pivotal region game last week.

Brandwood anticipates well and that paid off in the Yellow Jackets' 21-7 win over Spring Valley on Friday night. He came from his outside linebacker spot and took good angles to the ball and made solid, hard hitting tackles when he got to the ball.

McGill was dominant up front in the Blue Eagles' 24-7 win over Blythewood. He pushed the opposing defensive front around, moved his feet well and brought the defensive lineman to his feet multiple times when we watched his game highlights.

Clark was used at the receiver position in the running game in the Bearcats' 42-21 win over Nation Ford last Thursday. He made several people miss in space and has great elusiveness along with speed. He can block well at the point of attack as well.

South Pointe's defense
We're not sure if we've given a game ball out to an entire defensive unit, but when Indian Land tried to run in between the tackles last Friday, someone on the South Pointe defense was there to make a play. [player_tooltip player_id='139304' first='Chris' last='Dixon'] was one of them with multiple tackles for loss along with [player_tooltip player_id='1142616' first='Jeremiah' last='Minor']. [player_tooltip player_id='1157988' first='Aakil' last='Brown'] had a tackle for loss on the zone read. RJ Bufford and [player_tooltip player_id='589016' first='Zantwan' last='Nelson'] (pictured above) had pass breakups in the secondary.
