Our initial 2030 rankings were released Monday, and we're breaking down all 62 ranked players. After going behind the scenes and looking at three big-picture things of note, let's break down our five ranked defensive backs.

2030 Defensive Back Evaluations

Hill's grade is incomplete since he doesn't have much public film on defense, but given his athletic profile and the offensive tape he's put out, we still feel confident ranking him this high in our initial 2030 rankings. The way he moves at 6'2" is the way you'd expect a future Division I defensive back to move. He has the ball skills, hip fluidity, and length to be a top prospect in the secondary.

Some guys just look like stars from the first snap of their careers. Burgess is one of those guys, as he had 21 tackles in his first three games. He flies around and looks confident—he plays with the swagger you'd expect from an upperclassman. He closes quickly with speed that pops on film. The scary part is he's still developing as a pass defender. The athleticism and range are there, so expect that part of his game to come sooner rather than later.

While we've listed Wilson as a defensive back, that's not exactly the role he plays for Northeastern. He moves around the defense, playing outside linebacker, safety, slot corner, and wherever else the coaching staff needs him to play. Sometimes, that's because a player doesn't really have a natural position. Other times, it's because he's a natural athlete who needs to be on the field. That's Wilson, and while I think he ultimately settles at safety, he's going to succeed wherever he plays.

Cockerham has earned some rotation snaps, and the film is pleasantly surprising. He flips his hips and gets from his backpedal into a full sprint. He's flashed range and ball skills. Though his evaluation is currently incomplete, his physical traits indicate he's a safety prospect to watch over the next three and a half years.

Brown hasn't locked down a starting role for Berry yet, but he's flashed ball skills and productivity while in the game. The Cardinals aren't afraid to play young players, and Brown has the length and toughness to earn more playing time as he progresses. Playing as a free safety, he's shown a fearlessness and willingness to come up and tackle in the running game, and he has an interception as a freshman as well.

There's plenty to come from Matt Morrow, Zane Rowland, and me on the 2030 rankings over the next week.
