Week 4 Defensive Standouts Across Illinois

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Week 4 brought plenty of big offensive numbers across Illinois, but several defenders made sure they weren't left out of the conversation. From a 20-tackle performance to a three-interception night, these players made their presence felt with tackles, turnovers and game-changing plays.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Jack Coates – LB, Jacobs</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Coates put together one of the biggest tackling performances of Week 4, finishing with <strong>20 tackles, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble</strong> in Jacobs' 31-27 win over Burlington Central. Jacobs needed nearly everything it could get defensively in a four-point game, and Coates was consistently around the football. His combination of tackle production and plays behind the line of scrimmage makes this one of the more impressive defensive stat lines of the week.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Caden Moran – S, Prospect</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Few defensive backs impacted a game more than Moran did in Prospect's 35-21 win over Fremd. Moran came away with <strong>three interceptions</strong>, tying the program's single-game record. Two of those picks came in the end zone to erase potential Fremd scoring drives, while his third interception was returned into Fremd territory and helped set up another Prospect touchdown. In a matchup between two unbeaten teams entering the night, Moran's ability to repeatedly create turnovers was a major difference.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ryan Cervi – LB, Carlinville</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Cervi was at the center of the Carlinville defense during a 28-20 win over rival Staunton. The linebacker finished with a team-high <strong>12 tackles</strong>, helping the Cavaliers survive a Staunton offense that produced nearly 400 total yards. With the Bulldogs threatening throughout the second half, Cervi's ability to consistently get to the football helped Carlinville secure its 14th consecutive victory in the rivalry.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">[player_tooltip player_id='970336' first='Vito' last='Pickard Jr.'] – LB, Homewood-Flossmoor</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Pickard didn't need a massive tackle total to make one of Week 4's biggest defensive plays. He recorded <strong>five tackles and a 34-yard fumble-return touchdown</strong> as Homewood-Flossmoor knocked off previously unbeaten Sandburg 35-13. Pickard scooped up a loose ball late in the first quarter and took it to the end zone for his first career touchdown. It was part of an outstanding night for the H-F defense, which forced four turnovers, recorded five sacks and scored two defensive touchdowns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
