Friday's Big Game Breakdowns: Week 2

Friday night brings another loaded slate of games across West Virginia, with big matchups in every class and plenty of teams looking to make a statement. We're breaking down some of the best games on the schedule, taking a closer look at the key matchups, players to watch, and what each result could mean moving forward. These are the games that have our attention heading into another big Friday night.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">MARTINSBURG AT BRIDGEPORT</h2>   The Game: It's no secret that this is many people's game of the week in the entire state of West Virginia in Week 2. Many hypothetical predictions have been made about which team would beat which over the years since the Bulldogs and Indians last met in 2022. All those predictions and what-ifs will come to a halt tonight when Martinsburg travels to Wayne Jamison Field to take on Bridgeport in what will likely be a packed house and a rowdy atmosphere between two proud programs that expect to win state championships every year. The Bulldogs have won four out of the last five meetings on the field and have held a usually explosive Single Wing rushing attack to just three total points in their previous two battles.   Keys to the Game: Both teams are known for explosive offenses and big plays, but each will need to limit those if they want to come out with the win. These will be two very different styles of offense, with Martinsburg running a balanced spread offense and Bridgeport boasting a physical, misdirection Single Wing rushing attack. This matchup has been a low-scoring affair the past two games, but both programs could argue that this is their best team of the series in 2026. Bridgeport can slow and shorten the game if they get a second-half lead that could spell trouble for the Bulldogs, but the Indians will have to contain Martinsburg's explosive bevy of athletes to get there.   Matchup to Watch: It all starts up front for both teams in this game. Martinsburg has to play assignment football against Bridgeport's style of offense that has a great blend of physicality and misdirection. Bridgeport's biggest question mark heading into the season was having to replace most of their offensive line from a year ago, and they seemed to have reloaded just fine against an overmatched Buckhannon-Upshur squad in week one. Martinsburg is athletic up front but may opt to insert some bigger defensive linemen to match what the Indians want to do. Martinsburg's linebackers and defensive backs will also have to be disciplined, reading their keys and executing their assignment while staying honest in coverage, with Bridgeport likely to try to strike on timely throws.   Score Prediction: Martinsburg 31 Bridgeport 24     <h2 class="wp-block-heading">SOUTH CHARLESTON AT CHAPMANVILLE</h2>   The Game: This is the biggest game in AAA this week and should tell us a lot about where both teams stand early in the season. Neither team had much trouble in Week 1, but this is a completely different test with big playoff points on the line. South Charleston looks much improved from a year ago with a bolstered roster, while Chapmanville is replacing a talented senior class with a young but talented group that'll need to grow up quickly. It's a tough road trip for the Black Eagles into Logan County against a Chapmanville team that reached the semifinals last season in what should be a great game to watch.   Keys to the Game: On paper, South Charleston may have the best offensive and defensive fronts in the state, with depth and talent that'll be a major challenge for the Tigers. Chapmanville has plenty of talent up front as well, but they'll need to elevate their play on both sides of the line to handle a nasty Black Eagles front loaded with pass rushers on defense and clog running lanes. On the other side, Chapmanville will have to slow down a dynamic South Charleston rushing attack that runs behind a big offensive line with D1 prospects highlighted by Morgan Watts and Elijah Bausley, among others, and backs capable of creating big plays. This game could come down to the trenches, and whoever wins there will control the game.   Matchup to Watch: Outside of the trenches, there'll be plenty of skill talent on display in this one. Chapmanville QB Dakota Dalton proved as a sophomore that he can lead the Tigers in big games, playing his best football in their upset win over Bridgeport and establishing himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the state. He'll need that same level of playmaking this week against a loaded South Charleston team, but the Tigers can't put everything on Dalton's shoulders. The players around him will need to step up and make plays to take some of the pressure off their quarterback if they want to secure a huge week two victory.   Score Prediction: South Charleston 28 Chapmanville 17     <h2 class="wp-block-heading">PRINCETON AT BLUEFIELD</h2>   The Game: Princeton dominated this matchup 51-6 early last season, a result that helped spark a 10-1 run for a young Bluefield team that reached the AA title game. Both teams look much different this time around, with Princeton graduating a large senior class while that youthful Beavers group is now a year older and more experienced. Bluefield is coming off an emotional Week 1 loss to rival Graham (VA) that was plagued by penalties, something head coach Freddie Simon and his staff worked to correct this week. This one has the potential for plenty of fireworks and another emotional contest in a great Southern WV matchup.   Keys to the Game: Both teams will need to keep their emotions in check and play disciplined football in a rivalry that'll bring plenty of intensity. Bluefield gave up more than 130 yards on penalties in last week's loss to Graham, and that has to get cleaned up quickly if the Beavers want to avoid an 0-2 start after entering the season with high expectations. Princeton has dealt with its own penalty issues dating back to last season, so the Tigers will need to avoid letting the moment get the best of them as well. In a game that could be decided by a handful of plays, the team that protects the football and plays the most disciplined should come out on top.   Matchup to Watch: There will be talent all over the field in this matchup, with both teams having college prospects at every position group. There aren't many obvious weaknesses to target, which should make for a great evaluation opportunity for college programs recruiting West Virginia. Every unit will be tested, from the trenches to the skill positions, and both teams will need their athletes playing at their best to come away with a huge win. Add the rivalry factor on top of that level of talent, and this is a must-watch game from start to finish.   Score Prediction: Bluefield 36 Princeton 35     <h2 class="wp-block-heading">PENDLETON COUNTY AT EAST HARDY</h2>   The Game: Pendleton County and East Hardy met twice last season, with the Wildcats winning both, including a 56-36 regular-season victory and a 35-27 overtime win in the Class A quarterfinals. Pendleton had to battle for four quarters against AA Petersburg in Week 1, while East Hardy rolled past Madonna 66-12 in a much more comfortable opener. That could make for an interesting early-season contest, especially with both teams capable of making a deep playoff run. This is the premier Class A matchup of the week, and with future playoff seeding on the line, this one could carry plenty of weight when November rolls around.   Keys to the Game: Who can get a stop? Both teams have explosive offenses and showed it in their meetings last season and in their respective openers. Depth is limited at the small school level, with many of these players seeing significant snaps on both sides of the ball, making conditioning another major factor in this matchup. With temperatures high around the state this week, the team with more gas left in the tank could have a big advantage late. If this game is close entering the fourth quarter, whoever is more conditioned may be the one celebrating.   Matchup to Watch: Two of the premier quarterbacks in West Virginia, and certainly two of the best in Class A, will be on display with Pendleton County's Colton Roberson and East Hardy's Trevor Roof. Both are high-level athletes who can impact the game with their arms and legs, while also making plays on defense. There's plenty of talent surrounding them, but whichever quarterback plays the cleaner game and rises over the other will likely come out on top in this huge week two matchup.   Score Prediction: Pendleton County 42 East Hardy 30
