Poll: Who is Oregon’s biggest offseason breakout prospect?

It's time to update the rankings in the state of Oregon.

The class of 2027 has already seen a major rankings shake-up, while 2028 is coming imminently.

Putting together those rankings takes hours for Jordan Johnson and Andrew Nemec, and it got them thinking.

Who has been the biggest breakout player of the offseason?

That question, by itself, can be weighed very differently.

Do you think “biggest breakout” means a player who has gone from unknown to multiple offers, rising dozens of spots in the rankings?

Or, do you think “biggest breakout” should mean the player who has gone from a few offers to double-digit offers and put three or four stars next to his name?

DB Jaxon Lee Jaxon Lee 6'3" | 190 lbs | WR/ATH Tigard | 2027 State OR , Tigard (2027) —Tigard had an off-kilter season last fall and hit the reset button on its coaching staff.

Any time that happens, it's possible a player slips through the cracks.

Lee, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound WR/DB, was stellar in a Prep Redzone Exposure Series event and carried that momentum into a DB MVP showing at The Northwest Showcase.

That two-week spurt launched him from relatively obscure two-way player with upside to a multi-offer prospect.

It will be fascinating to see how he develops his body, because if he adds to his frame while maintaining his fluidity, he could be a dangerous defensive weapon in the right system.

Lee has taken full advantage of the offseason with the right attitude and great performances.

LB/SS Aidan Galusha Aidan Galusha 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB/RB Dallas | 2027 State OR , Dallas (2027) — A head coach for a playoff team that faced Dallas last fall said Galusha absolutely ruined their gameplan single-handedly.

The 6-foot, 210-pound springy athlete was the conference defensive lineman of the year and an all-state edge, but actually projects as a hybrid SS/OLB at the collegiate level.

He delivered a 4.48 40, and if you aren't comfortable with that time he also has gone sub-4.6 on multiple attempts this offseason and ran a 10.9 in track.

Galusha is a workout warrior who is a late bloomer on the recruiting trail, but a proven performer on Friday nights.

He holds a few offers, but it feels like only a matter of time before the Big Sky eventually starts to pull the trigger.

He's had a stellar offseason on track and in camps.

WR/TE Presley DeLance Presley DeLance 6'4" | 230 lbs | WR/TE Lake Oswego | 2028 State OR , Lake Oswego (2028) — Last season, DeLance popped on tape as a potential bluechip recruit but had just 9 receptions for 235 yards and 1 touchdown as a sophomore.

Those aren't Earth-shattering numbers, but the testing numbers and his 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame were absolutely undeniable.

College coaches have taken notice.

DeLance, who was ranked the No. 4 player in the state after last year, has picked up scholarships from Auburn, Boise State, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, Washington and others.

He's a player who had tremendous hype coming into the offseason and now heads into his junior year as one of the most heavily offered WR/TE prospects the state has seen in years.

TE/DE Brady Knips Brady Knips 6'5" | 210 lbs | TE/EDGE Tualatin | 2028 State OR , Tualatin (2028) — The 6-foot-5, 215-pound tight end/defensive end was already No. 6 in the Prep Redzone rankings.

But the more familiar we've gotten with Knips and his game, the harder it is to find a reason not to move him up the board.

Knips was absolutely tremendous at The Northwest Showcase and was firmly in the discussion as the Overall MVP of his session.

How rare Is that for a tight end?

National analyst Brandon Huffman couldn't remember it happening at any camp he'd been to, but also agreed that Knips firmly was in the discussion.

Knips was that good.

While his recruitment hasn't taken off to the same degree as others - he is still waiting on his first offer - the transition from “good player” to “dominant physical force” has been made.

Look for Knips to be one of the best players in the state this fall, and for him to reach double-digit offers by the time his career comes to an end.

RB Reece Ballew Reece Ballew 5'9" | 175 lbs | ATH/RB Mountainside | 2027 State OR , Mountainside (2027) — I feel like I've written the same few paragraphs about Ballew all offseason.

He looked the part as a sophomore and got hurt for his junior season, so he needed a massive offseason to re-enter the picture.

Ballew ran a 10.76 100-meter dash and won MVP awards at two Prep Redzone events.

Multiple people who have seen him play have stated he should easily be a 1,500-yard back if he stays healthy, and 2,000 yards in this year's Metro League is not out of the question.

For a guy who has barely played football in the past 18 months, he couldn't have done more to raise awareness about his ability.

He'll flirt with well-informed preseason all-state lists.

Ballew has been that good.

JJ was adamant a breakout was coming and that Ormond could very well end up being a Division I prospect.

Fast forward to today and Ormond is almost universally considered the top interior defensive lineman in Oregon's 2027 class and is committed to Eastern Washington University, a Division I program.

Score another early call for Johnson.

It wouldn't shock me at all if Ormond picked up a few FBS offers this season.

He's going to be a dominant force in the Three Rivers League and that film should go a long way in allowing his recruitment to hit one last gear.

TE George VanSandt George VanSandt 6'5" | 235 lbs | TE/EDGE Central Catholic | 2027 State OR , Central Catholic (2027) — At the start of last season, VanSandt was a back-up.

After a month, he had supplanted a multi-offer FBS recruit for the No. 1 spot.

This offseason, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end clocked 21.1 miles per hour as a sprinter and added offers from Arkansas, Oregon and Oregon State.

After originally choosing the Razorbacks, he flipped to the Ducks.

From back-up to Oregon commit in a nine-month span is a shocking climb.

VanSandt should be a much more productive player this fall, delivering on the tremendous hype he has built up this offseason.

OL Peter Stanley Peter Stanley 6'4" | 285 lbs | OL Summit | 2028 State OR , Summit (2028) — Stanley already held an offer from Cal after last summer, but his recruitment went quiet.

Was the 6-foot-4, 295-pound lineman for real?

Well, Stanley earned OL MVP at The Northwest Showcase and has since picked up offers from the Ivy League and Washington State.

When a player pops early from outside the Portland area, sometimes it takes time and the right opportunity - a camp featuring the best players in the region - to prove that player is truly legit.

Stanley showed that at The Northwest Showcase.

He'll be a multi-offer guy and is certain to end up as an FBS recruit - with Power 4 potential.

OL Kai Peau, Central Catholic (2028) — I love Nate Peau Nate Peau 6'3" | 310 lbs | OL/DL Central Catholic | 2027 State OR as a prospect and feel like he's one of the most under-appreciated players in the region.

His brother, Kai, is also quite talented, but it seemed like Nate's recruitment would naturally pop first because he's a year older.

Instead, Kai had a monster performance in front of Oregon State's new staff in a camp setting and picked up an FBS offer from the Beavers.

That's a massive start for the Central Catholic star, especially since Colorado State, UNLV and others are also in the mix now.

Peau has a chance to be a double-digit offer guy - with that momentum beginning in earnest this offseason.

DE/TE Leofatu Filipe Leofatu Filipe 6'5" | 230 lbs | EDGE/TE Thurston | 2028 State OR , Thurston (2028) — The 6-foot-5, 230-pound two-way standout has exploded since May, earning offers from Arizona, Boise State, UNLV, Utah and Washington State.

Filipe has bluechip upside and will certainly be rising significantly up our rankings.

There are a handful of players in Oregon who could end up being No. 1 in the rankings by the time the very last update comes out after their senior seasons.

Filipe is going to be in that discussion to the end.

His stock is skyrocketing.

DL PJ Tautu PJ Tautu 6'4" | 255 lbs | DL/OL Central Catholic | 2028 State OR , Central Catholic (2028) — Tautu has been the No. 1 player in the Prep Redzone rankings for some time, but he still qualifies as a breakout candidate.
