Hybrid Defenders Making the Off-Season Count

It has been a hot July for ballers continuing to fine-tune their craft and the heat will continue to ratchet up in more ways than one the closer we get to strapping it on for real.   For the upperclassmen who have been through this transition a few times already, the mindset is to finish the off-season grind strong and roll into the season ready to hit somebody in the mouth.   There are only so many varsity opportunities left - best be ready to take advantage of them when your time comes up.   In this report, we are taking a quick look at four senior multi-positional, hybrid defenders who are all battle-tested and ready to showcase their senior game this fall and then take a look at a rising-star junior who was last seen training with a famous KC Chief defender.   So, without further adieu, let's check these guys out:     [player_tooltip player_id='1563229' first='Boden' last='Bell'], 6'3, 205, DE/Edge/LB, St James Academy, '28, he is coming off a limited-action sophomore season but when his opportunities came around he showed glimpses of big things to come as an aggressive defender coming off the edge. Since then his off-season has been busy with training and recently was at the KU Camp in June where I first saw him in action. He is also just returning from spending a week of 1v1 training with KC Chief great, Tamba Hali, focusing on technical hand work, body leverage, hip mobility and balance. As an OLB or coming off the edge he uses a quick bend and burst getting around perimeter blockers, but has the explosiveness to bull rush right over the top when needed. He is one of the next in line from the legendary Bell family, as his dad, cousin, uncle, grandpa, and great uncle were some of the best players the state of Kansas has produced. This guy is just getting warmed up and is ready for a breakout season.   [player_tooltip player_id='2160476' first='Tyler' last='Hook'], 5'11, 185, LB/DB, Shawnee Mission NW, '27, up first for the seniors is a multi-positional hybrid linebacker/d-back who can play all over and is coming off a standout junior season when he piled up 100+ tackles, 8 TFL, 3 sacks and had a fumble recovery. He started the season strong and just kept getting better, finishing the year with 16 tackles in the final playoff game, and in the last three games of the year averaged an eye-popping 14 tackles a game. His read and react skills and baller instincts are finely tuned and once the ball is snapped he is all over the play. Whether in the secondary as a ball-buster strong safety or at any of the LB positions, he collapses down quickly to make violent open-field tackles or stuff the inside gaps. He has been training hard with his teammates, doing speedwork and setting PRs in the key lifts. With last year's springboard season and an excellent off-season underway, this guy is going to sizzle this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='1250567' first='Brody' last='Sedlacek'], 6'0, 205, LB/Edge, Hanover, '27, it is going to be tough to top last year as not only did this guy and his teammates win state championships in both football and basketball, but they broke the famous Axtell 58-game win streak when they beat them twice, first in the regular season and then later in the playoffs. As a two-way hybrid baller who can line up at numerous positions on both sides of the ball, he plays an aggressive, high-IQ game and last year had just under 100T, 15TFL, 8S, 2 FR and a blocked punt on defense. On offense he has developed into a dangerous all-purpose back who had 300+ total yards and 8 TDs. This off-season he has kept his head down and has been focused training with Kegan Schumann and Revive Performance between other sports and camps. I was able to see him in action at the Revive/McPherson camp this past spring and he looked ready to help lead the charge for another dominating season.     [player_tooltip player_id='1530394' first='Julian' last='Gallegos'], 5'11, 200, LB/DB, Eisenhower, '27, next up is another senior who has been on my annual watchlist for the last few years as a versatile defender who can play any of the linebacker positions, come off the edge or drop back and play either safety. When I saw him in action he showed fast recognition with great lateral burst and finishing speed flying to the football. His instincts are next-level and enable him blow up plays between the tackles or quickly track down backs trying to turn the corner. Over the last couple of seasons he has averaged well over 100+ tackles per season, including 129 as a sophomore, and is looking to top those numbers with a big senior year. Once the season was over he went right into basketball and hitting the off-season weight training hard. This summer he is focused on getting stronger, faster, and more explosive lifting, doing speedwork, fine-tuning position skills. It's hammer time this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='1464032' first='Mason' last='Isch']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/mason-isch/"></a> , 6'1, 205, LB/ATH, Wamego, '27, last and certainly not least is an elite baller who head coach Weston Moody earlier this spring said had "the perfect blend of speed, explosiveness and physicality." High praise from a veteran coach who has seen numerous outstanding players over the years. An athletic, aggressive linebacker who has next-level read and react skills, he quickly diagnoses plays and destroys them before they get started. He is also a force off the edge with a quick first step and the explosiveness to go around or over the top of perimeter blockers. Last fall he dominated with 111 tackles, 16 TFL, six sacks and a forced fumble and this spring set new PRs in the discus (156'+) and shot (56'+). Interest is building and offers are starting to roll in. This guy is going to be en fuego this fall.   In conclusion, get out and see these guys dominate this fall - you will not be disappointed.
