Welcome to Prep Redzone Oregon's 2026 Football Season Preview series! Over the next several weeks, I'll be highlighting programs from around the state as we count down to kickoff. Let's be honest, 6A football gets plenty of attention, so this series is all about shining a light on the outstanding players, coaches, and programs throughout Oregon's smaller classifications. Over the summer, I reached out to head coaches across the state to learn more about their teams heading into the season. These previews are built using their insight, giving fans a look at each program's expectations, players to watch, and goals for 2026. Every article is based on the coaches who took the time to respond, helping tell the story of their program.

2026 South Albany RedHawks

The South Albany RedHawks enter the 2026 season looking to turn the page under new head coach Jay Minyard. After finishing 2-7 a season ago and missing the 5A state playoffs, South Albany is embracing a fresh start with a brand-new coaching staff, new systems on both sides of the football, and a renewed sense of excitement heading into the fall.

With so much change taking place, Coach Minyard knows there will be a learning curve, but he has been encouraged by what he has seen throughout the offseason. While there is still plenty of work ahead, the RedHawks have attacked the summer with the right mindset as they continue to install their new schemes and build the program's culture.

"Our goal is to represent our program, school, and community in the best way possible," Minyard said. "We want to win the games we should win on paper and then go find a way to upset one or two teams that people don't expect us to beat." That mentality reflects a team that understands the challenge ahead but is eager to compete every Friday night.

Miller returns as one of the leaders of the RedHawks after starting on both sides of the ball for much of last season. Coach Minyard expects him to anchor both the offensive and defensive lines, bringing toughness and experience to a young roster. His versatility and physical style of play should make him one of South Albany's most important players this fall, and he is a lineman who could attract attention from college programs.

Hallberg returns after starting both ways last season and is another player expected to see an expanded offensive role. With more opportunities at wide receiver in the new system, he'll have the chance to become one of the RedHawks' top offensive weapons while remaining a key contributor in the secondary. His versatility makes him one of the more valuable players on the roster.

A returning all-league center, Hollstien gives South Albany another experienced presence in the trenches. He'll also contribute defensively this season, providing valuable two-way production up front. Coach Minyard believes he has the ability to play at the next level, and his consistency and leadership will be key for the RedHawks.

Mohammed is expected to take on a much larger offensive role this season as he transitions into the featured running back position. With increased touches in South Albany's new offense, he'll have every opportunity to showcase his playmaking ability while continuing to contribute on defense. He is another player Coach Minyard believes has the potential to continue his football career after high school.

Schofield gained valuable varsity experience as a sophomore, appearing in several games last season, and now steps into what could be a breakout year. He'll be tasked with leading the offense in a brand-new system, and his development will go a long way toward determining South Albany's success. With another offseason under his belt, he has an opportunity to establish himself as one of the more intriguing young quarterbacks in the Mid-Willamette Conference.

South Albany may be one of the younger and less experienced teams in 5A this season, but there's a sense of optimism surrounding the program under Coach Minyard's leadership. A new coaching staff, new schemes, and several experienced two-way players provide a strong foundation as the RedHawks begin a new chapter. While there will undoubtedly be challenges along the way, South Albany is focused on competing every week and building something that can continue to grow well beyond the 2026 season. South Albany opens up the season at home against North Eugene on August 28th.
