In this scouting series breaking down the top football players by position and classification, here's an in-depth look at the top four Class 3A defensive linemen in Tennessee entering the 2026 high school football season.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1032139' first='Drake' last='Hickman'] – Westview High School

[player_tooltip player_id='1032139' first='Drake' last='Hickman'] was a force on Westview's defensive front last season, totaling 91 tackles, 18 for a loss and five sacks while helping lead one of the elite defenses in Tennessee. The 2027 prospect took a great step in his sophomore season, but is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. He holds no offers, but college coaches need to lock in. This talented player is going to be a must-have recruit in the next two seasons.

He is slightly undersized, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 235 pounds. However, the rising junior is well-built, with excellent athleticism, strong testing times and plenty of strength in his stout frame. Even as a defensive lineman, he ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash, which helps him dominate on the interior or as a true defensive end.

His weight really isn't a problem given how he is building his body, but you would like to see him add more good weight this offseason. Hickman is an elite run stuffer who controls the line, but can also get after quarterbacks. He is developing as a pass rusher, but has nice upside in that department. Once he polishes up his skills and grows physically, he could be the No. 1 defensive lineman in Tennessee.

2027 Bradley Buter – White House Heritage High School

Bradley Buter from White House-Heritage is one of the best defensive linemen in Class 3A and is coming off a successful junior season. He played in all 11 games, recording 86 tackles, 15 for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. The rising senior offers some nice traits for the position, making him an intriguing prospect who should see more attention.

He projects more as an edge rusher than your traditional defensive lineman, but I like his upside and had to include him in this article. Butler stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 210 pounds in a strong frame that holds weight well, but has the space to add more muscle.

The 2027 prospect is good in all areas, but excels as a pass rusher. He gets off the ball quickly, has a nice repertoire of moves, plays with intensity and has strong instincts that carry him to the quarterback. Butler contains the run well, too. He's very physical, has nice technique, possesses strong hands and solid bend that allows him to get around offensive tackles.

2027 Ja'Marien Crawl – Tyner Academy

Tyner Academy's Ja'Marien Crawl is an exciting edge rusher with nice upside. He is coming off a solid junior season, totaling 44 tackles, 13 for a loss and three sacks. However, the rising senior got better this offseason and showed out in their spring scrimmage against Coffee County Central, where he had 2.5 sacks in just the first half.

It seems that he's taken that next step as a pass rusher, and if that's true, he will be one of the most dangerous defenders in the 3A classification. He offers good size for the position, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 218 pounds in a long frame that is perfect for an edge rusher. You'd like to see him add more weight, but his body allows for just that, so I'm not worried.

Crawl is athletic and moves relatively well, along with having plenty of power to get around an offensive lineman. The 2027 prospect offers solid bend and quickness off the ball, while being able to be used in several stunts. He needs to polish up in certain areas and become more fluid, but I see the vision for this young football player.

2027 Karson Lifsey – Westview High School

Karson Lifsey is a two-way player for Westview High School who projects as an offensive lineman at the next level, but I also like his ability on the defensive side of the football. He's coming off a solid 2025 season for the Chargers, totaling 40 tackles with three for a loss. After another offseason to train, the rising senior is due for a big campaign on both the offensive and defensive lines.

He offers solid size for his position and classification. Lifsey is relatively athletic and plays hard for Westview, which allows him to make plays on both sides. The 2027 prospect is one of the better run stoppers in this region, with an underrated ability to pressure the quarterback. He is not the biggest name, but Lifsey is a productive player who needs more attention.
