Sights and Sounds: Santa Fe Indian School 7×7 (Video/Recap)

SANTA FE – Santa Fe Indian School hosted a four-team 7x7 jamboree on Saturday with Capital, Highland and McCurdy participating. For those keeping score at home, that's a pair of Class 5A programs and a pair of Class 2A programs.

It made for some intriguing action.

SFIS is led by third-year head coach Anthony Segura. The Braves have joined District 2A-5 following two years as an independent. Rising juniors Isaiah Maestas and Jayden Rascon are battling for the starting QB job. Whoever wins the spot will have a weapon in extremely quick WR Paxton Lorenzo, who proved difficult for defensive backs to cover with his impressive speed.

The Braves will battle Cuba, Navajo Prep, Newcomb and Shiprock in District 2A-5.

Carlos Perea, father of former West Las Vegas standout QB CJ Perea (9^th on NMAA all-time passing yardage list), has taken over as head coach of the McCurdy Bobcats. Perea is transitioning McCurdy from a run-dominated offense to a more balanced scheme.

An asset he has: BIG rising senior Gakena Monroe has taken over the QB duties, making the rarely seen move from offensive tackle to quarterback. Monroe, though, stands about 6-foot-5, so he should have little trouble lookover over the trenches and spotting open receivers. Monroe throws a good ball, illustrating he has potential to become a good QB once he perfects his mechanics. McCurdy will compete with Raton, Santa Rosa and Tucumcari in District 2A-2.

The best player on the field Saturday was Capital rising senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604951' first='Ace' last='Bachicha']. He can make all the throws, so if his receivers find a way to get open, Bachicha will get them the ball in catchable situations, often with a perfect spiral. In fact, Bachicha's first throw of the day was a beautiful 40-yard TD pass down the left sideline.

Highland used a pair of young quarterbacks in Saturday's 7x7 jamboree as starting QB [player_tooltip player_id='2109032' first='George' last='Salzano'] had a day off. However, the Hornets employ a run-dominated attack (Highland threw the ball just 61 times in 12 games last season) and plan to do the same thing again in 2026.

VIDEO 1: McCurdy vs. Capital

https://youtu.be/LG6QuuM3Xxo?si=dvA4GqlSDA1VIwOn

VIDEO 2: SFIS vs. Highland

https://youtu.be/q_Ug_CdsJhk?si=gbItD_MjYg1FyTwL

VIDEO 3: McCurdy vs. SFIS

https://youtu.be/2Oeh7YPwEqE?si=-FuO_9zExLsSbgV2

VIDEO 4: Capital vs. Highland

https://youtu.be/pRrq59kQgwM?si=3t72C7Y_Yr1cngte
