Predicting Every Team's 2026 MVP: Region II-3A

Region II-3A is an interesting study when you're looking at players who can lead their teams in 2026.   Old-school reporters used to call RBs who could be relied on to control a game "bellcows". Well, we can consider the region a pretty big pasture.   Four of the five football-playing schools in the new region boast a feature back who rushed for at least 650 yards, with three going over a thousand. The only school without at least its second-leading rusher returning is the two-time defending Upper State champion.   Yes, it's easy to tell you that a good running back can be his team's MVP. But there are few places where this many good RBs are gathered in one spot.   Here's our look at the players who we think can turn in MVP performances in Region II-3A.   BELTON-HONEA PATH BEARS   [player_tooltip player_id='1820573' first='Ty' last='DuBose'] LB, 2027   The team most noted for their rushing attack is the one in the region that won't return a feature back. On the other side of the ball, Dubose is going to be one of the guys tasked at stopping all the rushing power in the region, and he's really good at it. He's versatile enough to play in the middle or off the edge, where he does a good job rushing the passer. He was one of the most athletic, explosive guys at the Carolinas Coaches Combines Spartanburg session, winning a pair of individual awards and looking dominant in drills. He's a big hitter and a sure tackler, and he has a way of seeming to be around the play all the time. Playing behind a good DL, Dubose should have plenty of room to run around and make plays for the Bears.    EMERALD VIKINGS   [player_tooltip player_id='1819707' first='Christopher' last='Dean'] RB, 2027   The Vikings have a lot of balance on the offensive side of the ball, and Dean is a big part of the reason why. He rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a junior, and averaged more than 120 yards a game and 8.1 yards per carry while scoring a dozen touchdowns. He's a tough runner for his size, and he's got fantastic speed and the ability to make the most of what the defense gives him, particularly when bouncing a play to the outside. He's also in a fantastic situation. The Vikings have a QB who threw for nearly 2,000 yards. All five of their top WR are back (with Dean as one of them), and they've added an elite guy at the position. In a region that relies on rugged running top-to-bottom, Dean will help to put the Vikings right where they need to be.    PALMETTO MUSTANGS   [player_tooltip player_id='1986479' first='Preston' last='Wilder'] RB/LB, 2027   Wilder was the Mustangs' second-leading rusher last season, and the team's top feature back behind a mobile QB. This year, he should have the bulk of the carries and a chance to show what he can do with them. He brings a linebacker's mentality to the position, and he runs like he craves contact. It's no surprise that a bunch of his yardage comes after first contact. He's also really good at catching the ball out of the backfield. He's not going to surprise anybody, and he's not going to do anything fancy. But if hard-earned straight-ahead yardage with a good burst and plenty of power is what you're after, Wilder's your guy.    POWDERSVILLE PATRIOTS   [player_tooltip player_id='1149055' first='Nasir' last='Waldrop'] RB, 2027   Waldrop is a high-volume, high-output guy for the Patriots. He touched the ball more than 180 times in Powdersville's run to the Upper State title game, and he amassed more than 1,300 offensive yards. More than 1,000 of that was on the ground, which is where Waldrop truly shines. He's a burner, and he's very much a cut-and-go guy. And when he does, it's very tough for a defense to run him down. The Patriots will break in a new QB after losing a talented senior, but Waldrop should be up to the task of taking on a lot of the offensive load.    WREN HURRICANES   [player_tooltip player_id='1790589' first='Muntu' last='Brown'] RB, 2027 (pictured)   Brown absolutely exploded onto the offensive scene for the Hurricanes in 2025. The former LB rushed for nearly 1,700 yards, and served notice that he's going to be a force for Wren. He's got a tremendous blend of speed, balance, and power, and he uses all of them very well. Brown can run by you, run over you, or run through you. He's rugged, with 229 carries a year ago, and that number might even go up. He's also got fantastic top-end speed once he finds open ground, and it's extremely tough to bring him down in space, even if you can get to him.
