Tualatin is young, but poised to make a potential Three Rivers League and state playoff push with one of the state's most talented rosters.

Last week, we took a look at the offense, so it's time to look at the other side of the ball.

The Timberwolves run a 4-2-5, which allow them to put their best athletes on the field.

“For me, it starts with our quarters coverage,” Tualatin coach Dominic Ferraro said.”We are a heavy pattern-read, pattern-match team, and the 4-2-5 is good to pair with that. We are fairly aggressive. We like to send five a lot, or six if the formation will dictate that. We try to be fairly aggressive.”

Defensive line

Don't be fooled by the number of players rotating in and out along the defensive line for Tualatin, the group is stacked with talent.

It's just too deep to stick to four.

Instead, the Timberwolves will keep their guys fresh by rotating players in and out.

“I actually think the D-line might be one of the strengths of our team,” Ferraro said. “We've got some big, fast, physical kids and we've got some really good complements. We've got a good opportunity this year to stop the run. We have a lot of depth and we've got some pretty talented kids there.

At defensive tackle, Isiah Ormond will play 3-tech, while second-team all-league selection (and wrestler) Freddie Serna returns.

Colby Wofford is another key contributor on the inside, and versatile big men Luke Patzke and [player_tooltip player_id='2106063' first='Rocco' last='Grady'] could line up all over the defensive front depending on the opponent and the health of the team throughout the season.

At edge, [player_tooltip player_id='2088792' first='Zane' last='Carley'], a second-team all-state selection last season, returns and provides plenty of pass rush, while emerging star [player_tooltip player_id='1609596' first='Brady' last='Knips'] will line up on the opposite side.

Damian Olvera, a steady presence for the state title-winning basketball team, is another player to watch.

Linebacker

At inside ‘backer, [player_tooltip player_id='1609595' first='Iden' last='Rule'] is “an absolute stud, while junior Corbin Sunnell, a wrestler, set the tone as an emergency starter in the playoffs against Jesuit.

That duo should take the bulk of the snaps at the spot, but others could fill in.

The outside linebacker position in Tuatlatin's defense requires a lot of athleticism and a strong understanding of what is playing out in front of them.

“We got 4-2-5, but our outside linebacker is more like safety and plays up in the box,” Ferraro said.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1265462' first='Miles' last='Evans'], whose older brother played for Tualatin a few year ago, likely leads the way for that spot.

Jake Mitrano (6, 215) is a guard on the offensive side of the ball, but is a “tough, physical kid” who could be an answer at linebacker, while Patzke could shift back from defensive line for a heavier set.

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2079648' first='Easton' last='Grubb'] and senior [player_tooltip player_id='937026' first='Zane' last='Lindsey'] are two other players to keep an eye on.

“(Lindsey) a bit undersized, but is a great program kid and he sticks his nose in,” Ferraro said.

Nas Howard is a player who may provide some depth as well.

Defensive back

Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='937241' first='Cole' last='Hachmeister'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2054697' first='Carter' last='Lemon'] will be a starting safeties, and both have all-league and all-state potential.

Beyond that, Tualatin is very athletic, but has some questions.

[player_tooltip player_id='937174' first='Houston' last='Lillard'] Jr., a standout receiver with an offer from Boise State, played significant snaps at corner last year and projects as a possible starter this fall.

Pat Vialva, Jr., the Gatorade Player of the Year in hoops, played in roughly four games last year but was dealing with an injury.

He could return this season, but it remains up in the air if he'll play football due to basketball obligations.

[player_tooltip player_id='1609605' first='Karoderick' last='Smith'] will also factor in at corner, while [player_tooltip player_id='1126329' first='Luke' last='Bergmann'] will be in the mix at safety.

Tualatin is young, but poised to make a potential Three Rivers League and state playoff push with one of the state's most talented rosters.
