Despite my strong distain for 7on7, its impact on the sport of football, the culture it is cultivating, and all that surrounds or comes with it, I covered my first 7on7 this weekend on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Prep Redzone produced the Garden State Gridiron tournament, a two-day championship event, hosted at Elizabeth Public School's William's Field and the city's downtown Todd Bowles Stadium. Day 1 of this event was a 10-hour nonstop, gauntlet of a marathon, with games every half-hour, on the half-hour. Nearly 35 U18 teams from as far as Western New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Long Island, as well as local teams alike, fiercely competed against everyone - their competition, the referees, event staff, coaches, spectators, security, and even internally amongst themselves - as nobody was safe.

With a lunch break, I did my best to cover each U18 team that was participating. With as much action as there was, I have decided to release my observations as game performance reports. Unfortunately, not all rosters were made available -neither by teams' managers nor Prep Redzone. As such, I have tried to report with as much fidelity as possible.

Ghosts

Unfortunately I was not provided jersey for Ghosts' roster; however, I recorded jersey numbers and corresponding notes for individual player performances.

Jersey # "$" made awkward decisions that you could only get away with in 7v7 and not real football. He freelanced like crazy, roaming the entire field. As such this compromised the defensive scheme's integrity. I think, perhaps, he is unsure as to what he is keying/reading and thus his play comes across as undisciplined.

Upon receiving the ball, Jersey # "!" turns and protects the ball immediately. This is a good habit he picked up from playing with his real football team. Later on he made a great grab over the middle, high pointing the ball. I put this one on the quarterback though. The receiver left his body completely unprotected, and thus vulnerable, to a vicious hit. Again, this is something that would not fly in real football and only exists in the 7v7 world.

Jersey #4 had a great break on the ball when defending. Opposing what I thought was a lazy comeback route, his break almost led to a pick.

Punishers

Out of nowhere, jersey #18 Jamiir Gregory started balling. A hometown prospect from Elizabeth, Gregory showed that he can quickly recover to under thrown balls on verticals. Despite not necessarily high pointing the ball, he uses his hands to receive it. A bit more slight a prospect, you can break up passes headed in Gregory's direction should you put a body on him.

It seemed as all the Elizabeth Minutemen were rostered on this team, as jersey #11 belonged to [player_tooltip player_id='1891858' first='Eric' last='Cespedes']. I thought that Cespedes showed his defensive prowess in this one, proving to be a rangey safety who can jump extremely well and win the tip drill when doing so. That said, Cespedes' strong play continued on offense. He snapped his hips hard, creating a great deal of separation, when running an in route. As the ball was delivered, he extended his arms beautifully to haul a pass in front of him in.

[player_tooltip player_id='1881391' first='Anthony' last='Adams'], yet another Elizabethian, rocked jersey #20. Much stronger than his opponent, Adams' opponent tried to jam him at the line of scrimmage - unsuccessfully. Adams flung that defensive back about 6 yards in the opposite direction, clearing the way to get open easily.

Grayer Hong, the quarterback, can stand to improve his lower-half mechanics just a bit. Albeit was a windy day, the ball died on him in the air just ab it at times.

Jersey #7 was beat deep, but he was in-tune enough to recover and make a play in defense of a ball that was underthrown.

Jersey #4 was able to adjust flawlessly to a ball that was thrown behind him.
