Tennessee high school football is loaded with talented defensive linemen, especially in Division II-A. From athleticism and run stuffing to technique and pass rush ability, several standouts bring unique traits to the field each Friday night.

In this new Prep Redzone scouting series, I'm building the ultimate player at every position and classification by combining the best size, skills, traits and intangibles from top prospects across the state. There's just one rule: each player can be used only once, unless necessary.

Next in the series, I'm doing Division II-A defensive linemen. By blending the best qualities of five different players, I've created the blueprint for the perfect defensive trench king in this classification heading into the 2026 Tennessee football season.

DL Frame: 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='866728' first='Matthew' last='Newberry'] – Nashville Christian School

[player_tooltip player_id='866728' first='Matthew' last='Newberry'] from Nashville Christian was the clear-cut choice for this category. He offers excellent size with a long frame, along with the strength necessary to be a productive player at his position. The rising senior stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 300 pounds.

While he's an interior guy, Newberry is relatively lean for his size, which makes him the choice for frame. There aren't too many people built like this in Division II-A, which allows the 2027 prospect to dominate for his team. Now, he provides arguably the most important attribute for this theoretical player.

DL Athleticism: 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1198812' first='Cason' last='White'] – Trinity Christian Academy

[player_tooltip player_id='1198812' first='Cason' last='White'] is one of the more talented young bucks in this classification. He's not the biggest guy, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing just 220 pounds, but he doesn't need elite size given how athletic he is at his defensive end position.

He's a long pass rusher who is elusive with nice bend off the edge. The Trinity Christian player possesses a quick first step, solid explosiveness and enough twitch to get past most offensive linemen.

DL Pass-Rush: 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1855561' first='Gideon' last='Knox'] – Friendship Christian School

[player_tooltip player_id='1855561' first='Gideon' last='Knox'] is arguably the most productive defensive player in this classification, with a wide array of useful tools. I had to take his pass-rush ability because it's nasty, in a good way. He got after quarterbacks quite a bit this past season, totaling a team-high nine sacks in 12 games.

Many things go into being a good pass rusher, but the first part is having a refined arsenal. Knox has that, along with a good get-off and the instincts to find his way into the backfield. He also has enough twitch and speed that tie everything together and make him one of the most feared defenders in Division II-A.

DL Technique: 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='1570558' first='Brixton' last='Dorris'] – Friendship Christian School

[player_tooltip player_id='1570558' first='Brixton' last='Dorris'] is another star on Friendship Christian's defensive front. He's also likely the most technically sound trench player in this classification, which is why he was my top choice for this category. Dorris is a seasoned veteran who's gone through several years of training to get where he is now.

The rising senior starts with good pad level, followed by nice get-off and a quick first step. He has good hand placement and understands how to use his leverage to beat defensive linemen.

DL Run Stuffing: 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='1613206' first='Tyson' last='Bond'] – Jackson Christian School

For the final attribute, we have the run-stuffing aspect. I chose [player_tooltip player_id='1613206' first='Tyson' last='Bond'] for this, as he was one of the best in Division II-A against the run in his lone season of high school ball. The Jackson Christian athlete is technically sound in most spots, which helps him clog run lanes, but his pure strength and keen football instincts take him to that next level.

Bond has a great feel for his surroundings, leading him to the ball carrier in most instances. That's something you can't teach. He also possesses a high motor that ties everything together and makes him one of the best young players in his class.
