The next 2027 rankings update is getting closer, and while the board may not see a complete shakeup, there are still several storylines worth watching as evaluations continue. From battles near the top of the rankings to position groups gaining depth and players pushing for movement, this cycle has no shortage of questions to answer. Before the updated board drops, here are five storylines that stand out heading into the next rankings release.

THE FIGHT FOR THE #1 SPOT

The top spot in the 2027 rankings has belonged to OL Landyn Moore since the class debuted in 2024, and the Princeton standout remains firmly in the conversation entering the next update. At the same time, the gap at the top may be tighter than in previous cycles. University OL Luke Braham has seen his recruitment take off this offseason with double-digit D1 offers and has quickly become one of the hottest names in the state. RB David Robinson Jr continues to stack attention as one of West Virginia's premier offensive weapons. At the same time, George Washington OL James Payne and South Charleston OL Morgan Watts have both strengthened their cases with continued development and recruiting traction. Martinsburg's dynamic athlete, Boston Todd, is another player worth monitoring after landing his first D1 offer and looking poised for a major senior season. The battle at the top may not be settled yet and will continue through their senior years.

NEW PROSPECTS TO THE TOP 100

While this may be a smaller update overall, there should still be movement throughout the board and potentially several new faces entering the Top 100 for the first time. Rankings are never static, and each cycle gives players another opportunity to earn a closer look. Whether it's new film finally being posted, strong camp performances, continued physical development, or simply a second evaluation that changed the conversation, there are prospects across the state making legitimate cases to climb. This update may not bring a complete reshuffling, but don't be surprised if a handful of names force their way into the mix.

ONE OF THE BEST OFFENSIVE LINE CLASSES IN RECENT HISTORY

We've talked about this group since the 2027 class debuted after their freshman seasons, and nothing has changed. This continues to look like one of the deepest offensive line classes West Virginia has produced in recent years, with both high-end talent and quality depth throughout the board. When the updated rankings are released, expect to see around 30 offensive linemen represented inside the Top 150, which has typically been our benchmark for players capable of drawing D1 and D2 attention. Six have already picked up D1 offers, and there are several more entering their senior year with a real opportunity to join them. This group has developed into a strength of the class and could continue climbing as evaluations continue.

WHO WILL SEE THEIR STOCK RISE THE HIGHEST?

Movement is expected throughout this update, and there could be nearly 25 prospects who see meaningful jumps across the rankings. New film submissions, strong camp showings, physical development, and growing recruiting traction have created more movement than some previous cycles. Rankings are designed to reflect the current landscape, and each update gives players another opportunity to earn a fresh evaluation. On the other side, if a player sees movement downward, that shouldn't automatically be viewed as a negative. In many cases, it's simply the result of others putting together strong offseasons and creating more competition throughout the class.

HOW MANY WATCH LIST PROSPECTS WILL MAKE THEIR DEBUT?

This may end up being the biggest storyline of the entire update. For the first time, the rankings will expand from 150 total players to 200, opening the door for a large group of prospects to earn their place on the board. As evaluations continue to wrap up heading into next week, expect more than 50 new names to debut in the 2027 rankings. That group includes former Watch List prospects who continued developing, along with players who either posted film for the first time or emerged through reevaluation. Every cycle brings new opportunities, and this update should introduce a wave of fresh talent across the state.

New names. New movement. Same goal of finding the best football players in West Virginia. Rankings drop next week, and Prep Redzone is the #1 spot to find talent in the state.
