Prep Redzone takes a look at some of the underrated defensive Class of 2027 prospects in the Nation's Capital, Washington D.C. This is Part 1.

Note: This excludes teams from the WCAC and IAC (will feature teams from those conferences in the future).

Hubbard is a physical, versatile defensive back who impacts the game in multiple ways. He lines up at corner, nickel, safety, and in the box, and looks comfortable at each spot. His run support stands out right away. He diagnoses quickly, closes fast, and takes clean angles to the ball. Hubbard avoids blocks, plays with toughness, and isn't afraid to finish tackles on the perimeter.

In coverage, Hubbard plays with good awareness. He reacts quickly to the quarterback and breaks well on short throws. From the safety spot, he stays disciplined over the top and tracks vertical routes well. Continuing to improve his man-to-man technique, his contested-ball skills, and his strength will help raise his ceiling.

Hubbard is a tough, reactive defensive back who plays fast, tackles hard, and brings valuable versatility to the secondary.

Hooper is a high-motor safety who plays fast and confidently on the back end. He lines up mainly at free safety and shows a strong feel for zone coverage. He has a natural sense for the game. On a tipped pass, Hooper reacts instantly, comes down with the interception, and takes it the distance. It's the kind of play that shows his awareness.

Hooper also brings a physical edge as a tackler. He triggers downhill with purpose and isn't shy about contact, even against bigger players. On perimeter runs and end-arounds, he closes quickly and finishes. Hooper tackles with good form and limits yards after the catch.

In coverage, he stays patient and reads the quarterback. He recognizes routes breaking in front of him and drives on short throws (as seen on a few plays in his highlights). He takes clean angles and arrives on time, whether playing deep middle, half-field safety, or matched on a slot. The breakup on the out route in one of his highlights shows timing and trust in what he sees.

Adding strength will help him handle the physical demands of the next level. Improving top-end speed wouldn't hurt either. I like the fact that he plays with urgency, reacts quickly, and puts himself in position to make plays.

Lafontant is a high-effort defender who plays fast and sees the game clearly. He lines up at both middle and outside linebacker. Lafontant's awareness shows up right away on film. Against the run, he diagnoses quickly, shoots gaps with confidence, and meets ball carriers near the line of scrimmage. Lafontant sets the edge well, stays under control, and finishes with urgency on outside runs and sweeps.

In pass situations, he stays alert and reacts quickly to screens and quarterback movement. He keeps plays in front in zone coverage and makes secure tackles on receivers after the catch. Adding more strength will help him take on blocks more consistently and finish with added pop. I like his energy, versatility, and motor.

Monyea is an active, aggressive edge defender who plays with energy and purpose. He lines up as a defensive end in both even and odd fronts and looks comfortable rushing from different alignments. Monyea does his best work inside. Against the run, he shoots gaps quickly, avoids blocks, and meets ball carriers at or behind the line of scrimmage in his highlights. Monyea also shows a good feel for cutback lanes and stays under control. When offenses try to kick him out, he holds his ground and forces the play back inside.

As a pass rusher, Monyea brings disruption. He uses inside leverage well and can power through blocks. Monyea consistently affects the quarterback and finishes when lanes open. He also adds value as a delayed blitzer, timing his rush and closing fast.

On the edge, he shows solid bend and works under blocks while maintaining outside contain. He reacts quickly when quarterbacks try to escape and stays involved even when he doesn't record the sack. Developing a deeper pass-rush toolbox and adding more snap explosiveness will help him win more consistently on the edge.

With that being said, Monyea's versatility, ability to disrupt the fun, and pressure the quarterback from multiple looks make him an impact player on the defensive line.
