A pair of former district rivals helped highlight the opening night of Louisiana high school football Thursday as St. Charles Catholic hosted Isidore Newman.

Both defenses controlled the game early, but the home-standing Comets received a special teams spark then doubled up with touchdowns just before and after halftime to begin pulling away.

Coach Wayne Stein's squad dominated the second half as their deep roster and conditioning helped underscore their success in the run game and on defense en route to the 36-3 win.

Here's a look at eight eye-catchers from the contest.

Byron Bailey — 6-1, 250 DL — St. Charles Catholic (2027)

The Comets' defense was stout at every level with several standouts making plays during the course of the game. The junior defensive tackler was among the most disruptive, helping plug up the interior line in run defense and making a couple plays behind the line.

[player_tooltip player_id='1601810' first='Skyler' last='Edwards'] — 5-10, 175 RB — St. Charles Catholic (2026)

The senior running back, key member of the Comets' backfield since he was an underclassman, will be relied up as a bellcow this season and excelled in his role to open the season with more than 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the heavy load on the dominant opening drive of the second half. He also had a couple nice catch-and-run plays out of the backfield to help set up another score.

Landree LeBlanc — 6-1, 170 QB — St. Charles Catholic (2027)

The Comets' junior quarterback was a steady hand at the helm of the offense with good decisions whether to hand to Edwards or keep — including a late pull he took for a long touchdown run — and an effective enough passer to move the chains through the air, including his accuracy and efficiency on a touchdown drive just before halftime.

Chrisd'on McClain — 5-7, 150 ATH — St. Charles Catholic (2026)

The speedy senior running back and defensive back provided the aforementioned special teams spark with a winding, 97-yard punt return for a touchdown on which he started out toward the sideline, cut back in and out and up the sideline and then back through traffic on his way to the end zone.

[player_tooltip player_id='1237792' first='Tyler' last='Milioto'] — K — St. Charles Catholic (2026)

The senior kicker banked a second-half field goal off the left upright and through for three points and also consistently put his kickoffs into the end zone to negate the Greenies' opportunity for returns.

Brooks Monica — 5-10, 190 LB — St. Charles Catholic (2026)

The productive, physical linebacker was as consistent a playmaker and tone-setter as anyone on the Comets' defense and finished in or near double digits in tackles, many of which were emphatic stops in terms of both their hard-hitting nature and occasionally their third-down circumstances.

Corbett Parrino — 6-0, 200 LB — Isidore Newman (2026)

As mentioned above, the Newman defense held its own before St. Charles was able to gain an advantage midway through the game and build upon it. The Greenies were strong up in a battle with a veteran and well-coached Comets offensive line, and Parrino was among the standouts

[player_tooltip player_id='920625' first='Jake' last='Randle'] — 5-10, 170 RB — Isidore Newman (2026)

The Tulane-committed running back took the reins of the Greenies' offense, working essentially as a full-time wildcat quarterback and making big plays with both his legs and his arms with the opportunity. Randle's toughness through contact and burst upfield flashed on his running plays, and he also made a few nice throws — both in stride over the middle and deep downfield — considering his newness to the position.
