SANTA FE – Capital High hosted a three-team scrimmage jamboree Thursday night with Class 4A Taos and 3A Pojoaque Valley competing against the Jaguars in controlled scrimmage situations.

In the first segment, each team's offense ran 15 plays against an opposing defense. The second segment consisted of goal line offense with each offense beginning at the 10-yard line.

All three teams are looking to climb the ladder in their respective classifications. Capital is coming off a 2-8 season in head coach John Michael Salazar's second year at the helm. The Jaguars run the Air Raid offense. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1604951' first='Ace' last='Bachicha'] is the likely starter at quarterback.

Taos finished 7-4 in head coach Johnny Olguin's first season in 2024. He replaced the highly successful Art Abreu, who led the Tigers to a 12-1 record and the Class 4A state championship in 2018. The Tigers return starting dual threat QB [player_tooltip player_id='853710' first='Evan' last='Salazar'], RB [player_tooltip player_id='853713' first='Reggie' last='Suazo'] and second leading receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1599919' first='Roman' last='Quintana'] (30+ receptions in 2024). Seniors Mario Rodriguez and Manuel Maes could be major contributors on both sides of the ball.

Taos has a challenging non-district schedule with games against defending 3A champion St. Michael's, Los Alamos and Highland. The three-week gauntlet against District 4A-1 rivals Bloomfield (9/26), Espanola Valley (10/3) and Grants (10/10) could decide the fate of Taos' season.

Pojoaque Valley is steadily improving under third-year head coach Zeke Villegas. Thursday, the Elks showcased impressive offensive skill position talent with junior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1248677' first='Joshua' last='Gonzales'], RB [player_tooltip player_id='1416992' first='D'Marcus' last='Rodriguez'] and others. The Elks' second elite RB, [player_tooltip player_id='1129687' first='Jonah' last='Villegas'], did not play. When he's not handing the ball off, Pojoaque Valley likes to roll out Gonzales and allow him to make plays on the perimeter, running or throwing.

The Elks are very aggressive and possess excellent size in the trenches on both sides of the ball with 6-foot-1, 230-pound junior [player_tooltip player_id='1248684' first='Michaelangelo' last='Leapingwolf'] and 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior Michael Marquez leading the way.
