As the off-season grinds to a close, the energy and excitement is building in Nickerson as the Panthers will finally field a team without relying on underclassmen to carry the bulk of the load.

The defense in particular is heavy with seniors and juniors with some key upperclassmen also available to help supplement where needed.

And, they aren't just any upperclassmen group, as these guys have been in a trial by fire atmosphere since coming on the scene as freshmen.

The experience gained has been outstanding, even if the wins have not. However, Head Coach Parker Bruce knew that coming in as a young defensive coordinator and following a career as a state champion who led the state with 12 interceptions at Andale before going on to play at K-State, he was ready to take on a significant challenge early in his career.

Fast forward four years and Coach Bruce is now getting ready for his first season as head coach and is starting to get some traction in his program. He has a group of upperclassmen on defense who are experienced and battle tested, which includes a handful of guys who will be looking to play at the next level in the near future.

Iron sharpens iron and these guys have put in their dues getting ready for the opportunity to bring the hammer this fall as upperclassmen.

In this report we are doing a deep dive into the Nickerson defense and breaking it down to better understand the team's approach to the 2024 season. Following some background information, we will do a brief overview, discussing scheming and style and wrap up with a look at key players on the team who have been stepping up.

So, without further adieu, let's take a look at what the Panthers have going on heading into this fall:

Background

The Nickerson football team has struggled since 2017, which was the last year they had a winning season. With the annual gridiron disappointments piling up it was hard to stay positive about the program and the overall attitude was counterproductive to winning football games. The culture for the Panthers football team was in freefall.

When Coach Bruce came on board he knew it was a multi-year project to get the team back on track. He bit the bullet and led and encouraged his young ballers to do the same and together they would turn the program around. This year will be led by upperclassmen - who were the freshmen and sophomores forced into varsity action early and took their lumps to older, more experienced teams.

This year the Panthers enter the season with a dozen battle-tested seniors and a handful of standout juniors who have banded together during the years of disappointment, believed in their young coach and are now prepped and ready for a breakout season.

Overview

Each year the Panthers have made incremental progress under Coach Bruce and as they have gotten better as a unit, they have matured physically and mentally and developed the chemistry and drive needed to flip the script.

The defense this fall is one that is three years in the making and it has been crafted around the 3 A's: Alignment, Assignment, Aggression. The mentality is to coach-up the players so they can play light's out and get 11 on the ball, on every play. The past three years they have been a predominantly 4-2-5 team, but with the variety of high-octane offenses they face every year (Pratt, Andale, Conway Springs, among others) they can't sit in one look and keep the offense guessing.

This year they will blend the 4-2-5 with a base 4-4 look now that coach Bruce has the personnel to make it work. They will also bounce around in odd fronts and stacking linebackers in more of a 5-2 or 5-3 look depending on the offense being faced.

The Panthers like to play heavy on 1st and 10 and force teams into second and long and then uncork a wide-ranging blitz and stunt package to really heat things up.

Next up, we will take a look at the key players at all three levels of the defense.

Defensive Overview

DL - the defensive line is going to be the anchor for a fast-moving defense that plays in attack mode from snap to whistle. With versatile upperclassmen manning key positions they are able to seamlessly switch from even to odd looks. Key players along the front lines are:

[player_tooltip player_id='944972' first='Zein' last='Rector'] , 6'1, 255, OL/DL, Nickerson, '27, He is coming off a good sophomore season as one of the cornerstones in the trenches for the Panthers on both sides of the ball. With his powerful base, lateral mobility and heavy hands he destroys double teams and helps shut down the run game between the tackles. Already a two-year starter with two more to go, he has had a strong summer and is ready for a dominating season this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1397406' first='Atton' last='Nelson'], 6'0, 210, DL, '26, he is another veteran baller who has started in the trenches since his freshman year. He plays a physical game and plays a big part in stuffing the run game as well as freeing up linebackers to fly to the ball.

Other Key Contributors: Kagyn Rice, '27; Conner Bower, '28 and Dagan Schneider '26.

LB - having a strong nucleus of linebackers is critical for many of the defensive looks the Panthers use. This year the linebacking group will be led by a couple of rising-star upperclassmen, supplemented by four guys who have been hitting it hard in the off-season and have coach excited about their potential.

[player_tooltip player_id='1268347' first='Rylan' last='Morrell'] , 5'10, 175, RB/LB, Nickerson, '27, he is multi-positional athlete who can play any number of positions on both sides of the ball. On offense he is a versatile all-purpose back who can get the tough yards up the middle or use his burst to hit the perimeter. On defense he is a swarming linebacker with great read and react skills who piled up just under 60 tackles last year and added three TFL and a sack. This guy is going to have a breakout season this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1397410' first='Riley' last='Brawner'], 6'2, 215, LB, '26, as the team's starting middle linebacker since he was a freshman he battled some issues last year which limited him to only six games, but in those games he was productive, picking up 50+ tackles. This year he is ready to get back in the groove and help the defense hit the opposition in the mouth. He is a multi-sport baller with the size and athleticism to be a dominating force for the Panthers.

Other Key Contributors: Gabe Taylor, 5'10, 175, LB, '26; Dalton Wakefield-Baker, '26; Elijah Trass, '27; Conner White, '26.

DB - the secondary for the Panthers was hardest hit by graduation as they have to replace both safeties and one of the cornerback positions. Anticipating this, Coach Bruce has been busy developing his young talent so they would be ready to step in and fill the void. As a former all-state defensive back, he knows a thing or two about developing top-end secondary players.

[player_tooltip player_id='1700859' first='Jeffren' last='Rodriguez'], 5'8, 150, DB, '28. He stepped up last year as an underclassman and has continued to impress coaches with his development. In particular his progress over the summer has coaches excited.

[player_tooltip player_id='1697958' first='Chase' last='Welch'], 5'8, 150, '27, is another rising star in the secondary who will be a big contributor and has been one of the most impressive defensive backs through the summer.

Other Key Contributors: Lian Hedrick, '26 and Alex Wallace, '26 are the lone seniors at corner; while Corbin Shelton, '27, and Maxx White,'27, will get time at safety.

In conclusion, get out and see these guys in action this fall – you will not be disappointed.

As a reminder, this is the second in a series on bone-crushing defenses primed for a big 2025. Next up, this coming Monday is the powerful Nemaha Central Thunder, one of the most loaded, lethal defenses in the state regardless of class.

And, as usual…

Keep grindin'

As the off-season grinds to a close, the energy and excitement is building in Nickerson as the Panthers will finally field a team without relying on underclassmen to carry the bulk of the load.
