PRZIA Davenport Area Prospects to Watch in 2025

The 2025 season is nearly upon us, and to get ready for it, I will be doing a coverage tour across the state of Iowa. In each feature, I will pick a small area to cover prospects of all grades, class, and positions.   My first stop is in Davenport, where I combed over the Davenport Central, West, and North rosters as well as Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley to highlight five prospects that you should keep an eye on this fall.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />    <a href="https://x.com/JackWessel3">(@JackWessel3)</a>   There is a classification of players that I refer to as "just get them on the field" types, and Bettendorf's [player_tooltip player_id='217007' first='Jack' last='Wessel'] seems to fit that mold. Just look at his Hudl page, and you'll see him listed as a QB, RB, WR, LB, and S, showing how versatile Jack is. Checking in on last season, Jack threw for 109 yards and a touchdown with an additional 209 rushing yards, 85 receiving yards, and two rushing touchdowns. Now, it looks like Jack is set to move into the starting QB role, where he should be able to continue his dual-threat ways. One play that really stood out from Jack's junior tape was a 70+ yard touchdown run where he outran a couple of defenders with good angles on him and stayed upright through contact, finishing with a good burst in the open field to seal the run in the endzone. Big season coming up for Jack!      <a href="https://x.com/Derrickpena_07" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(@Derrickpena_07)</a>   Davenport North's [player_tooltip player_id='1619398' first='Derrick' last='Pena'] is an interesting prospect who is set to be a key two-way player for the Wildcats. As a junior, Derrick tied for the team lead in rushing yards after racking up 366 yards and five touchdowns on only 64 totes. Derrick is a sturdy running back with a strong 5'11", 190-pound frame that he can use to absorb and dish out contact. Derrick doesn't do a lot of dancing around when carrying the ball, instead using his size to go north-south while having the cutback ability and vision to bounce runs to the outside. Pena will also be an important part of the defense as he recorded 45 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, a sack, and a fumble recovery. Derrick is listed as an outside linebacker, but I could also see him playing as a hybrid box safety with his ability to fly downhill to defend the run and effectiveness at covering tight ends and running backs. He plays well near the line of scrimmage, where he can stay right in the action and track down ball carriers before breaking off any big runs.      <a href="https://x.com/HunterBenn8209" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(@HunterBenn8209)</a>   Joining Pena on the defense is transfer LB [player_tooltip player_id='1619384' first='Hunter' last='Bennett'], who is moving over from Davenport West. While at West, Bennett was the Falcons' most productive defender last season as he recorded 86.5 tackles, four TFLs, and a sack. Hunter is a throwback linebacker who does an excellent job fitting the run game with his instinctive gap play and physicality at the point of attack. Bennett has a solid frame at 6'0", 200 pounds, and he knows how to use every bit of it when going to make a tackle, delivering some brutal blows while not compromising his technique. Good use of hands to disengage at the line of scrimmage. Watch out for Bennett to rise in the next update.      Davenport Central's [player_tooltip player_id='1693455' first='Logan' last='Wineinger'] is another prospect who should find himself in the rankings at the next update. Wineinger stands out on the roster with his 6'4", 270-pound build with room to continue filling out his frame. Logan flashed a quick first step and uses violent hands at the point of attack to swat away at reaching linemen. Once he's used his hands to disengage from blockers, his lateral quickness and relentless pursuit help him close on the ball in a flash. He does a good job filling in multiple gaps and can set the edge very well when defending outside runs. Versatility along the defensive line adds extra value. Watch out for Logan this fall!      <a href="https://x.com/cox_cary2027" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(@cox_cary2027)</a>   Pleasant Valley's [player_tooltip player_id='1584396' first='Dane' last='Cox'] is the only junior on this list as he's primed to have a big season playing on the offensive and defensive lines for the Spartans. Although Dane's sophomore tape was limited, his impact was not as he recorded 20.5 tackles, seven TFLs, and two sacks while playing defensive tackle. Dane excels at winning at the point of attack, utilizing leverage and effective hand placement to move blockers off the ball with his powerful leg drive. Cox's feet are constantly moving throughout the rep, which keeps him from giving up any ground. Dane had an impressive play in his tape where he was able to take on the double team, using his hands to split the blockers, and then spilled into the backfield for the TFL.     <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   Make sure to follow @PRZ_OscarG for more news on Nebraska and Iowa HS recruiting.
