Camping Season: NMHU Pleased With First-Ever Camp Tour

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>LAS CRUCES</strong> -- &nbsp;You can feel the positive vibes surrounding the New Mexico Highlands football program.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Four months after signing the largest group of 2025 NM prospects of any school in the state, NMHU started its first-ever camp tour last Friday night at Cibola High School in Albuquerque. The tour came to Las Cruces High Saturday night and continues Monday night at Artesia High School.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>For second-year head coach Kurt Taufa'asau (he was officially named HC on May 29, 2024) and his staff, the tour has allowed the Cowboys to circle the state and meet and evaluate prospects, an important early step in the recruiting process.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“We're excited as a coaching staff to be out and about in the state of New Mexico,” Taufa'asau told Prep Redzone New Mexico following Saturday night's camp at LCHS. “Just so the kids can see our faces and seeing New Mexico Highlands coming to their town. It's been going well so far. We had a slightly higher turnout (Saturday) night than (Friday) night. I think the players feel like they've learned a lot and have been able to put a face to a name. So far, it's been a success.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Holding camps in southern and southeastern New Mexico is important for NMHU considering the significant number of prospects from this region NMHU signed in February.,</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“It shows the importance of having New Mexico guys on our staff,” Taufa'asau said. We have coaches from Truth or Consequences, Las Cruces, Ruidoso and Artesia. It's exciting for what we're trying to build up there in Las Vegas. Our coaches really relate to the players on a different level. We want to build those relationships. We're all about relationships and trying to build that connection.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Monday's camp in Artesia could be the first time one of the state's three D2 schools has held a camp in that football-crazed city.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“Why wouldn't you have a camp in Artesia,” Taufa'asau said. “It's title town for a reason. When our coaches brought up the opportunity to host a camp in Artesia, I said, ‘Let's Go.' No questions asked. We're excited to be here in the southern region of the state.
