The recruiting calendars have been turned upside down with the transfer portal. A lot of high school student-athletes must wait longer to find homes these days while colleges are wading through transfers during smaller windows to recruit them.

That's not all bad for the prep ranks. It gives guys more time to mature and improve their skills. In doing so, they're more attractive to college programs, who can more easily project high school seniors.

Here's a group of in-state guys that should give scouts on the next level something to think about this coming season:

Behind seniors last season, Kerr made the most of his limited opportunities, averaging 5.9 yards on 12 carriers. With the guys ahead of him graduating, Kerr should be positioned for a bigger workload in 2025. When popping on his junior highlight video, we witness a back capable of running inside with good vision or bouncing it outside. Quickness and sharp cuts stand out no matter where he's carrying the rock. Not the biggest guy, Kerr still shows tackle-breaking ability with legs that keep churning. I'm interested to see what he can do with more carries.

Bennett racked up 86.5 tackles (53 solo, 4.0 TFL) and a sack last season for Davenport West. His Hudl page lists his school as Davenport North now, so he appears to have switched to a program that's experienced more success recently. Bennett could be in line for a super senior season when considering his junior highlight video. Operating with a high motor and his head up, Bennett finds his way to the ball more often than not. His quickness and lateral movement help him avoid blockers. When he is locked up with the opponent, Bennett's strength leads to separation.

Boender is an interesting prospect. He handled the bulk of Oskaloosa's quarterback reps last season, throwing for eight touchdowns. His contributions stretched beyond that, however. Boender also caught seven passes for 182 yards and three scores, and 11 of his 14.5 tackles were solo. He added a fumble recovery. Boender's junior highlight video reveals a very intriguing athlete. The first clip shows him zipping the ball in for a touchdown pass, and the second one has him lining up wide and eating up a defender for a long scoring reception. We also see Boender impressively covering a receiver down the seam as a safety. College coaches might want to take a peek in Osky.

When Carbajal got his chance, he contributed for the Little Hawks in 2024. He caught eight passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. On defense, the junior chipped in with 7.0 tackles, four of which were solo. City High graduated a decent amount of production from his positions, so Carbajal could parlay his experience into more reps. His junior highlight video shows us an interesting prospect. Carbajal gets into and out of his routes quickly, and finds holes in the defense. He's elusive in space, where he makes defenders miss with shiftiness and acceleration.

The Scarlets captured several nice victories last season with Coakley delivering on defense. He totaled 38.5 tackles (24 solo, 6.5 for loss) with 4.0 sacks and four fumble recoveries. Coakley's junior highlight video serves as evidence as to how he gets the job done. He's fast and physical, capable of avoiding blockers or tossing them out of the way. His lateral quickness aids him greatly as does his understanding of leverage. Coakley comes off of the edge effectively, but also can bursts through the O-Line from the inside.

Edwardson's junior highlight video contains a well-rounded receiver capable of stretching the field or operating underneath. Edwardson is shifty in space and also appears to have straight-line speed. As a defensive back, Edwardson tracks the ball well and breaks on it quickly. A possibility on offense and defense, Edwardson certainly is a candidate to help in the game's third phase, special teams.
