New Mexico is blessed to have plenty of talented young quarterbacks. Here are some of the top sophomore (2027) quarterbacks from the 2024 season (listed in alphabetical order):

[player_tooltip player_id='1604910' first='Tristan' last='Begay'], Tohatchi: Perhaps the most unheralded sophomore QB in the state, Begay ranked 3rd among sophomore QBs this season in passing yardage. He finished with about 1,800 yards passing and 24 TD.

[player_tooltip player_id='1369761' first='William' last='Braun'], Albuquerque Academy: The first of two sophomore QBs to throw for 2,000+ yards in 2024. He finished with 2,374 yards and 19 TD in 2024. However, Albuquerque Academy didn't make the playoffs, so Braun and his teammates have plenty of motivation going into next season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1154948' first='Isaiah' last='Carpenter'], St. Pius X: The top passing sophomore QB in the state this past season. The 6-foot-5 Carpenter led the Sartans to the Class 4A state championship game by throwing for 3,114 yards and 34 TD, by far the most of any 2027 QB in the state. He was one of just three QBs to surpass the magical 3,000-yard passing plateau.

[player_tooltip player_id='1155032' first='CJ' last='Granados'], Dexter: Granados is another talented sophomore QB who led his team to the state title game. Dexter fell in the 3A title game but Granados enjoyed a spectacular season with over 1,700 passing yards and close to 500 rushing yards. Granados began playing QB for the Dexter varsity as an 8th-grader in 2022 and currently has 3,312 passing yards on his resume.

Jahleel Lewis, Sandia: Lewis established himself as one of the top young QBs in the Albuquerque Metro Region with a solid sophomore season as he led the Matadors to the 6A playoffs. Lewis finished with over 1,300 passing yards and 14 TD. Lewis and freshman RB [player_tooltip player_id='1613382' first='Gad' last='Harris'] will be a formidable backfield duo for the next two seasons.

[player_tooltip player_id='1604916' first='Levi' last='Shelton'], Ruidoso: Shelton threw for close to a 1,000-yards to help lead Ruidoso to an improbable Class 3A playoff berth. The Warriors overcame numerous obstacles, including devastating wildfires and floods in their hometown.

[player_tooltip player_id='1604705' first='Micah' last='Takahashi'], Rio Rancho: Takahashi staked his claim this season to being the top sophomore dual threat QB in the state. He began the season as the Rams' backup QB and third-string RB, but quickly emerged as an offensive force. He accounted for over 1,500 total yards, split fairly evenly between passing and running, and 17 TD. The Rams appear to be in good hands at QB for the next two seasons.
