GRANITEVILLE | Head coach Brent Dorn can never have too many “Prestons” on his Midland Valley roster.

Playing on a short week due to threatening weather conditions, the aforementioned trio played a major role in the Mustangs' 42-21 win over Brookland-Cayce.

Quarterback Preston Butler and running backs [player_tooltip player_id='1615063' first='Preston' last='Smith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='272712' first='Preston' last='McNair'] (pictured) combined for 28 unanswered points in earning the first win of the season for Midland Valley (1-4, 1-1).

“They all work,” Dorn said. “I trust every single one of them. They do what they're supposed to do They're putting their time in in the film room and whoever it is, I trust them with the ball and let them do what they've got to do.”

McNair accounted for two of the four rushing touchdowns by the Mustangs. Smith and Caleb Williams each rushed for a score running behind their prodigious offensive line.

The group included guards Demarque Ford (6-foot 4, 295 pounds) and Cameron Criscillis (6-feet, 300 pounds), tackles Jonathan Dunbar (6-foot 3, 245 pounds) and Matthew Derudder (6 feet, 290 pounds) and centers Christian Fail (6-foot 3, 261 pounds) and Sean Tiedman (6-foot 1, 250 pounds).

“From what we lost last year and these guys, they hang out all the time,” Dorn said. “They do all the little things right, but they work. They're on that sled all the time. Coach (Justin) Medlock does a great job with them. Him and Coach Burns, I couldn't be prouder of them. They've had a strong last three weeks and it's going to continue.”

Midland Valley's “open competition between Butler and [player_tooltip player_id='644030' first='Xavier' last='Geter'] continued with both quarterbacks orchestrating scoring drives in which they had fourth down conversions. The right-handed Geter started and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1010338' first='Cameron' last='Gleaton'] on fourth and nine to tie the game at 7-7.

When Butler entered on the next possession, the right-hander had a 21-yard completion to Jayden Franklin to set up McNair's first touchdown run. He then threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Allen Cummings after the Mustangs recovered an onside kick.

Brookland-Cayce (1-4, 1-1) found success early running wide receiver Jvonn Edwards out of the Wildcats. Much like another CSRA senior running back with a familiar sounding name but different spelling (South Aiken's [player_tooltip player_id='272702' first='Jevon' last='Edwards']), his elusiveness and quickness put the Bearcats in position to take an early lead.

A 2-yard touchdown run by Tyrone Johnson was the lone score through three quarters for Brookland-Cayce. Senior Jordyn Smith led the pressure upfront on the defensive line and junior free safety CJ Richardson was omnipresent on several stops.

The fourth quarter saw Brookland-Cayce quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='860400' first='Drevon' last='Dopson'] finally connect on big passing plays. He found Edwards for a 25-yard touchdown and lofted a 40-yard pass to an open Tyree Johnson who raced down the sidelines into the endzone to close out the scoring.

“Our mindset is ‘We over Me',” Dorn said. “We're trying to be more of the ‘We.' We kind of gotten rid of a lot of the ‘Me' part.”
