Week 2 Game Report: Pine Island Panthers vs. Lake City Tigers

As week 2 of the high school football season comes to an end, we take a look at another rivalry-matchup in the MN Southeast Division between Pine Island (1-0) and Lake City (1-0). Pine Island was coming off a strong start to the season in shutting down St. Charles while Lake City edged out La Crescent-Hokah 7-6 in week 1. While the Tigers had some bright moments in the game, the Panthers shut down Lake City's offense, keeping them out of scoring range throughout the game, and the Panthers were able to generate several big plays throughout the night that allowed them to shut out the Tigers 26-0 to stay undefeated to start the season.   Here were some of the best performers from the game!   ATH Nick Thein - Pine Island: 5'10, 150 lbs, 2026   Undoubtedly the MVP of the game, Nick Thein made a significant impact for the Panthers at all three phases of the game. Thein looked solid as the team's tailback, rushing for 53 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. On defense, Thein was a difference-maker in keeping the Tigers scoreless, recording an interception, and getting a TFL on a 4th-&-1 attempt to force a turnover on downs. Additionally, Thein started the second half with a 75 yard kick return touchdown which set the tone for Pine Island to control the rest of the game. Thein will be significant in maintaining the Panthers' strong momentum to start the season moving forward.   ATH Aaron Lou - Lake City: 5'11, 180 lbs, 2025   Aaron Lou has been the all-purpose factor for the Tigers, and while the team failed to generate any points on the offense, Lou had a sharp night generating some very nice plays. Lou finished the game with 74 rushing yards on just 9 carries, churning a couple of long runs as he showcased his speed running by the Panthers' defense. Lou also looked solid in man-coverage, accounting for a couple of pass-breakups, and not allowing many completions through him. Lou also utilized his speed well in the kick-return game throughout the night. Lou should continue to be seen as a fast and versatile threat on the Tigers' team this season.   OL Greg Banasyznski - Lake City: 6'4, 280 lbs, 2025   I mentioned about Greg Banasyznski earlier this summer for how stout and tough he's been as the blindside blocker for Lake City, and it showed once against Pine Island. Banasyznski was a wall on the trenches, and while the Offensive-line for the Tigers had issues during the night containing the Panthers' defense, Banasyznski held his own. His firm hands that I had mentioned showed, as it seemed that once he put his hands on a defender, there's almost no way of him getting around. I'm excited to watch Banasyznski continue to grow as a strong pass-protector this season.   WR Drew Sailer - Pine Island: 6'2, 160 lbs, 2025   Drew Sailer had a strong debut last week against St. Charles, scoring two touchdowns, and he topped that performance against Lake City. Sailer finished the night with 109 yards on 5 catches and scored 2 touchdowns coming from 2 different QBs. Both of his touchdowns came on contested balls where Sailer managed to do a spectacular job adjusting against the man-coverage, gaining leverage in front of the defender, and leaping to make the snatch. Sailer has done a brilliant job so far this season in winning the 50-50 passes. Sailer should be regarded as a serious WR prospect to look out for this season.   ATH Asher Bee - Lake City: 5'8, 170 lbs, 2025   Asher Bee has been another dynamic player for the Tigers, seeing reps both at QB and HB, and he's flashed solid athletic ability throughout his time with the Tigers. Against Pine Island, Bee finished with 51 rushing yards on 9 carries in the losing effort, but Bee was explosive on his carries, showing great lateral speed and attacking the gaps with full aggression. The passing game struggled as a whole against Pine Island as the protection broke down throughout the night, which affected Bee's performance on the air. Bee's versatility and athleticism is intriguing, and the Tigers should take advantage of that moving forward this season.   OL Cody Bremer - Lake City: 5'9, 200 lbs, 2027   Another blocker for the Tigers that intrigued me on Friday was Cody Bremer, the sophomore who saw a lot of reps at Right Tackle. For his size and lack of experience, he showed a lot of good reps holding his own in containing edge-rushers from getting into the backfield. He played with solid depth, a good back-drop against the outside rush, and he can get into the second-level of defense to make a block downfield. Bremer helped contribute to the solid performance of the run-game for the Tigers on Friday. Hopefully, Bremer will continue to grow in size and develop into a very solid contributor on the trenches.
