LOVINGTON – Unleashing an array of offensive weapons and their impressive team speed, Lovington raced past Roswell, 35-21, Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.

Lovington built a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, using long passes to set up three short touchdown runs by running back [player_tooltip player_id='615565' first='Ondalis' last='Cardenas'] (13 carries, 85 yards), and was never seriously threatened thereafter to improve to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in District 5A-2.

Roswell got to within two touchdowns in the fourth quarter when they scored a TD, recovered an onsides kick and scored again on a run by QB Jacob Palomino but Lovington staved them off.

Lovington QB Mathew Prudencio, emerging as one of the top passers in the state, completed 15-of-21 passes for 245 yards and 2 TD. Again, he didn't throw an interception.

Through four games, Prudencio has completed 72.1 percent (80-111) of his passes for 12 TD and zero INT. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season on Friday night.

“I knew Mathew was capable of what he's doing out here,” Lovington head coach Josh Bailey told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I'm really proud of the poise he has. He is poised and in control. He's comfortable and makes great decisions. It's helping us win football games.”

Long connections, mostly down the middle of the field, by Prudencio to [player_tooltip player_id='1118377' first='Patrick' last='Sanchez'], Ryan Weiser and [player_tooltip player_id='1137475' first='Jayden' last='Gutierrez'] set up Cardenas' three TD runs in the first quarter as Roswell clearly struggled with Lovington's speed on the outside.

“We're very explosive offensively,” Bailey said. “Taking advantage of our speed is always an important part of our game plan. My job is to get those guys out in space because they're really good when we do that. After that, they get to do what they do with the ball.”

Playing without [player_tooltip player_id='613065' first='Camon' last='Ochoa'], one of its top running backs, Lovington was still able to rush for 138 yards on 31 carries. Five receivers had multiple receptions.

“[player_tooltip player_id='613065' first='Camon' last='Ochoa'] is one of the best running backs in the state of New Mexico, so it's hard to be without him,” Bailey said. “But our other guys are stepping up. Right now we have slot receivers Ryan Weiser and [player_tooltip player_id='615536' first='Alec' last='Holguin'] playing running back to give Odalis Cardenas a breather. But it all starts up front. Our offensive line and offensive line coach are doing a very good job. We're learning how to be a physical football team.”

A short TD run by Roswell RB [player_tooltip player_id='1118273' first='Xai' last='Carrasco'], which quickly followed a long run by Palomino, gave Roswell their first points of the night early in the second quarter. But Lovington scored the next two touchdowns for a 35-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.

After stopping Roswell on downs around midfield late in the second quarter, Prudencio found [player_tooltip player_id='1137867' first='Elijah' last='Rivero'] in the middle of the end zone for a TD with 13 seconds left in the second quarter for a 28-6 halftime lead.

Lovington put the game out of reach in the third quarter when [player_tooltip player_id='1137465' first='Kyler' last='Reaves'] turned a short pass by Prudencio to the flat into a 70+ yard touchdown play down the left sideline. The Wildcats finished with 383 yards in total offense.

“Our energy is what propels us right now,” Bailey said. “Our guys are fired up. They're playing for each other and making the big plays. They get super excited when the big play happens. Right now, we're able to throw the ball when we need to or run it when we need to. Our guys are understanding the game plan on both sides of the ball.”

Defensively, Lovington allowed just a single TD through the first 3+ quarters. Only a pair of late TDs by Roswell made the final score closer than what the game actually was.

Rivero and Reaves led Lovington with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. The Wildcats had 7 tackles for loss, 6 QB hurries and 2 sacks.

“I'm really proud of our defense,” Bailey said. “They do get overlooked sometimes because we put up such good numbers on offense. Our defense is always prepared. That's a testament to our defensive coordinator Josh Faith. They have a good idea of what's coming, so they get to play faster."
