The countdown is on for pre-season football practice to commence and for some it is a last-second mental reminder to start getting back into football shape or pay the price for being a couch potato in a couple of weeks.

For others, no mental trigger or high-tech reminder is required. The guys wanting to take their skill sets to the next level have stayed in shape in the off-season and worked at it in grueling fashion to get even better. No last-second risk taking - these guys have been laser focused since their last snap a year ago.

Add to it that this is the last hurrah - the final time these kids will play for their respective high schools, and the focus, determination and commitment to make this a season for the ages is simmering deep.

In this report I wanted to highlight some kids from the Wichita and Surrounding Area, including Western Kansas, who have been on my watchlist for this fall. These guys have been burning the candle at both ends getting ready for some Friday Night Lights action.

So, without further adieu, I bring you the "Start-of-the-Week Five", who are getting ready to bring the fireworks this fall:

[player_tooltip player_id='570213' first='Brody' last='Weir'] , 6'4, 245. TE/DE, Wellington. Is ranked #44. He is coming off a good start a year ago and has numerous scouts and schools looking long and hard at adding him to their rosters. He has prototype size with a powerful base, excellent reach and an outstanding catch radius that will enable him to own the endzone this fall. Last year he showed what a playmaker he is capable of being when he caught 16 passes for 267 yards and a pair of TD's through the air, and carried the ball 18 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns, averaging just under 8 yards a carry. He is a dangerous target in the Wellington offensive system, lining up in tight, as an H-back or on the wing. As a receiver he is an athletic, agile, powerful runner after the catch. He is also a sledgehammer of a blocker in the run game. The big man is gonna light things up this fall, so get out and see him while you can.

[player_tooltip player_id='1213981' first='Jon' last='Gould'] , 6'5, 265, OL, Maize is ranked #114. He is coming off a good off-season when he finally started getting a little recognition after flying under the radar somewhat. He is looking to build on his All-Conference performance from a year ago and help the Eagles soar this fall. He has a good tackle frame but can play anywhere along the line of scrimmage. He is superb in pass pro, with great feet, head on a swivel, and extended reach which he uses to stonewall defenders trying to get into his pads. He moves well in the trenches, whether it is in pass pro, boxing out in space or chipping off to cutoff linebackers. He has a strong foundation and gets good leverage before piledriving them into the dirt. He is getting ready to get a lot of interest from scouts and coaches this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1171024' first='Jayden' last='Amaro'] , WR, 6'2”, 195, Dodge City, is ranked #133 . He is coming off an excellent start to his high school career, hauling in 31 receptions for 469 yards as a junior for the Demons. He has been working hard in the camp-combine routine in the off-season and is getting ready to start piling up the college offers. He is a fast, physical receiver with good size, soft hands and is fearless going across the middle and making the tough contested catch. With excellent reach, he has a next-level catch radius and is almost impossible to stop in the red zone. Running precise routes, he is able to create separation within the first couple of steps. He keeps defensive coordinators up at night trying to figure out how to stop him from burning teams deep with his blazing speed and acceleration. Get out and see a stud getting ready to dominate this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='866494' first='Christian' last='McDonald'] , 5'11, 180, DB, Maize South, is ranked #165. He is coming off a standout junior season as a versatile, athletic defensive back and return man. He can play any of the defensive back positions or even drop down in the box as a strong safety to stop the run as needed, but where he really excels is as a glove-like shutdown corner. He has the requisite quick feet, the capability to instantly change direction, flips his hips effortlessly and can play a smothering game of bump and run on the other team's top receiver. When he is not shutting down the other team's wideouts, he can play as a free safety, hovering over the top with great field vision, route recognition and fine-tuned instincts. Once he dissects the play he quickly collapses down on the run or hijacks passes in the area. He's got all the tools, get your popcorn out for this kid.

[player_tooltip player_id='1228445' first='Kasey' last='Giesenhagen'] , 6'3, 195, WR, Colby, is ranked #354. He is coming off a solid start to his high school career, as he caught 18 passes for 470 receiving yards for a dazzling 26.1 yards per catch, and added six touchdowns through the air. He definitely won't be ranked this low for long. He is usually split wide in the Colby air attack where he sets teams up with a bevy of short-to-medium routes, before burning them deep down the seams and sidelines. He has next-level receiver size with extended reach and the ability to snag the apex-level catch when his team needs it. He has excellent wheels with a good burst, which he effectively uses when generating separation. He is also an excellent blocker on the perimeter and is a special teams warrior burning a path to the football. Get out and see a stud flying under the radar this fall.
