Event Recap: Scout’s Notebook – Jersey Juice D-Line, Vol. 2

After a long offseason it appears as though Dim regained confidence in his feet as the day wore on. At first I noticed him looking down at them, however, they steadily improved as he got going and ultimately manifested in him showing how quickly he can get down hill and change direction. Throughout drill work Dim maintained good pad level. He also demonstrated a good get off and stutter/hestiation move that caught his matchup flat-footed at moments..... Hailing from Highland Regional is [player_tooltip player_id='1164724' first='Jaiden' last='Smith']. Smith, like Dim, was able to accelerate downhill well. Smith did a great job threatening with the outside speed rush as well. This allowed him to own the edge against most opponents. On one particular play Smith impressed as he took the edge, only to double-swipe back inside as his matchup, threatened by Smith's speed, overset to the outside.   From a perennial South V contender, Lenape's [player_tooltip player_id='1276716' first='Andrew' last='Johnson'] is a rising junior who has raw potential, and thus upside. What I saw with Johnson, more so than other defensive line prospects, was the activation of his hips. Hips are something that separate good players from great ones. The fact that Johnson showed that he understands how to use them is a promising outlook. Additionally, he showed instances of power. Another full year in the under Lenape's strength and conditioning program will surely make him a solid prospect in short-order..... Last year's South Group V #1 seed, Cherokee, sent current sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1276724' first='Theodore' last='Skversky'] to compete. Skversky hit a beautiful dip & rip to gain the edge on one particular rep. He exaggerated the rip by grabbing grass and then uppercutting to the sky. His technique allowed him to break free of what would have certainly been a hold. Later on, I would describe Skversky's approach to pass rushing as "reactive." I say this because rather than pass rushing with a plan, it seemed as though Skversky was reading and reacting to the actions of his matchup.   Closing out today is Riverside's [player_tooltip player_id='819156' first='George' last='Branin']. Having seen Branin three weekends in a row, he continues to show all the different ways he can showcase his strength. At Jersey Juice, however, Branin showed exactly how strong his chest is as he was able to neutralize a pass setter with one arm and walk him back. I recall recently encouraging Branin to work to stack moves in my <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2024/05/event-recap-psr-big-camp-series-scout-notes-d-line-vol-1/">PSR BIG Camp Series piece</a>. After having a chance to go back to my notes, down in the familiar confines of South Jersey, he was able to do exactly that. On one rep Branin set up a swift and sudden swim move after setting it up with his near-patented bull rush.
