The great news is, we don’t have to wait until region play opens to see some fantastic matchups. There are a bunch of non-region games that involve rivalry matchups, cross-classification games, and a ton of talent. Here’s a look at some Spartanburg-area non-region matchups that we can’t wait to see.
August 23
Greenville at Dorman
This has been a good one to start the season for the last couple of years, and should be again. The Red Raiders will take the field under a new head coach in Jaybo Shaw, but there will be some familiar faces on the field. Those include a virtual no-fly zone in the secondary with Christian Henderson Christian Henderson 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Greenville | 2025 State SC and Ramani Bruton Ramani Bruton 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Greenville | 2025 State SC , as well as the talented Jair Simmons Jair Simmons 6'1" | 300 lbs | DL Greenville | 2025 State SC as Greenville’s latest standout on the defensive line. The Cavaliers have a young group coming up that they’re super excited about, but veteran OL Landon Greene Landon Greene 6'2" | 330 lbs | OL Dorman | 2025 State SC will lead the way up front for Dorman.
August 30
Dutch Fork at Spartanburg
The Vikings have played the Silver Foxes as well as anyone in the state in recent years, and this early matchup is always intriguing. Dutch Fork is loaded yet again, particularly on defense. Elgin Sessions Elgin Sessions 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Dutch Fork | 2025 State SC , Josh Smith Josh Smith 6'2" | 220 lbs | DL Dutch Fork | 2025 State SC , and Raleigh Salters Raleigh Salters 5'10" | 190 lbs | LB Dutch Fork | 2026 State SC give Dutch Fork ranked talent at all three levels, while RB Maurice Anderson Maurice Anderson 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Dutch Fork | 2025 State SC , OL Josh Benson Josh Benson 6'7" | 300 lbs | OL Dutch Fork | 2025 State SC , and ATH KJ Smith KJ Smith 5'7" | 170 lbs | ATH Dutch Fork | 2025 State SC will be among others to watch. Torrean Davis Torrean Davis 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Spartanburg | 2026 State SC at WR and Trenton Lynch Trenton Lynch 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Spartanburg | 2027 State SC at RB will be big-play threats for the Vikings.
September 6
Greer at Byrnes
This game is listed as a Byrnes home game, but that brings up an interesting problem for the Rebels. Due to a massive stadium construction project, Byrnes will play every game on the road in 2024. This one is a rivalry matchup, and both teams will be replacing a bunch of talent on both sides of the ball. Greer’s usual power run game will hinge on the guys up front, notably Kaleb Nelson Kaleb Nelson 5'11" | 285 lbs | OL Greer | 2025 State SC . Byrnes will be looking to identify playmakers on offense, but there’s no doubt about one: Tre Segarra Tre Segarra 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Byrnes | 2027 State SC is one of the top RBs in the state, regardless of class.
September 13
Clinton at Chapman
This has been everything from a region contest to a late-stage playoff game for the past several seasons, and the rivalry is only getting better. The Red Devils were hit hard by the injury bug last season, but in the midst of that, QB Tushawan Richardson Tushawan Richardson 6'0" | 165 lbs | QB Clinton | 2025 State SC emerged as a leader for Clinton’s offense. Rion Gordon Rion Gordon 5'10" | 240 lbs | OL Clinton | 2025 State SC is another, anchoring the offensive line, while LB Brett Young Brett Young 5'10" | 175 lbs | LB Clinton | 2025 State SC seems to be everywhere all at once. Chapman will have to replace a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but they have some leaders back defensively including Hank Tolleson, Chanson Mickles Chanson Mickles 5'10" | 190 lbs | ATH Chapman | 2026 SC , and Khamari Turner.
September 20
Powdersville at Broome
This has quietly turned into one of the best non-region rivalries in 3A Upper State football, as the two have played some thrillers over the past three years. This one will have a different look, as both teams have some spots to replace. Davious Wardell is a talented OL/DE for the Patriots, while Elijah Bell Elijah Bell SC and Jed Rogers will lead on the DL. Elijah Huggins Elijah Huggins 5'7" | 165 lbs | ATH Powdersville | 2025 State SC is a true burner, and should see time at several spots. Broome has the state’s No. 1-ranked 2026 player in RB Jaylen McGill Jaylen McGill 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Broome | 2026 State SC , and he is as-advertised. Both leading receivers are back as well, as Grayson Bradley and Tresean Suber return. Broome’s defense will be led in part by a pair of rising juniors, Tyqwon Booker and Asher Littlejohn.
