With realignment altering the region schedules across the state, there are a number of exciting region matchups that have already been circled on the calendar.

The great news is, we don't have to wait until region play opens to see some fantastic matchups. There are a bunch of non-region games that involve rivalry matchups, cross-classification games, and a ton of talent. Here's a look at some Spartanburg-area non-region matchups that we can't wait to see.

August 23

Greenville at Dorman

This has been a good one to start the season for the last couple of years, and should be again. The Red Raiders will take the field under a new head coach in Jaybo Shaw, but there will be some familiar faces on the field. Those include a virtual no-fly zone in the secondary with [player_tooltip player_id='276660' first='Christian' last='Henderson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='390438' first='Ramani' last='Bruton'], as well as the talented [player_tooltip player_id='809748' first='Jair' last='Simmons'] as Greenville's latest standout on the defensive line. The Cavaliers have a young group coming up that they're super excited about, but veteran OL [player_tooltip player_id='809750' first='Landon' last='Greene'] will lead the way up front for Dorman.

Dutch Fork at Spartanburg

The Vikings have played the Silver Foxes as well as anyone in the state in recent years, and this early matchup is always intriguing. Dutch Fork is loaded yet again, particularly on defense. [player_tooltip player_id='1012606' first='Elgin' last='Sessions'], [player_tooltip player_id='1012706' first='Josh' last='Smith'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1025776' first='Raleigh' last='Salters'] give Dutch Fork ranked talent at all three levels, while RB [player_tooltip player_id='1012701' first='Maurice' last='Anderson'], OL [player_tooltip player_id='1012842' first='Josh' last='Benson'], and ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1013047' first='KJ' last='Smith'] will be among others to watch. For Spartanburg, [player_tooltip player_id='346191' first='Calvin' last='Choice'] is a star on both sides of the ball, while [player_tooltip player_id='624354' first='Cam'Rich' last='Smith'] is one of the best LBs in the state. [player_tooltip player_id='816749' first='Torrean' last='Davis'] at WR and [player_tooltip player_id='1172345' first='Trenton' last='Lynch'] at RB will be big-play threats for the Vikings.

September 6

Greer at Byrnes

This game is listed as a Byrnes home game, but that brings up an interesting problem for the Rebels. Due to a massive stadium construction project, Byrnes will play every game on the road in 2024. This one is a rivalry matchup, and both teams will be replacing a bunch of talent on both sides of the ball. Greer's usual power run game will hinge on the guys up front, notably [player_tooltip player_id='1013076' first='Kaleb' last='Nelson']. Byrnes will be looking to identify playmakers on offense, but there's no doubt about one: [player_tooltip player_id='1036721' first='Tre' last='Segarra'] is one of the top RBs in the state, regardless of class.

September 13

Clinton at Chapman

This has been everything from a region contest to a late-stage playoff game for the past several seasons, and the rivalry is only getting better. The Red Devils were hit hard by the injury bug last season, but in the midst of that, QB [player_tooltip player_id='1012830' first='Tushawan' last='Richardson'] emerged as a leader for Clinton's offense. [player_tooltip player_id='241184' first='Rion' last='Gordon'] is another, anchoring the offensive line, while LB [player_tooltip player_id='150043' first='Brett' last='Young'] seems to be everywhere all at once. Chapman will have to replace a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but they have some leaders back defensively including Hank Tolleson, [player_tooltip player_id='1041795' first='Chanson' last='Mickles'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1732638' first='Khamari' last='Turner'].

September 20

Powdersville at Broome

This has quietly turned into one of the best non-region rivalries in 3A Upper State football, as the two have played some thrillers over the past three years. This one will have a different look, as both teams have some spots to replace. Davious Wardell is a talented OL/DE for the Patriots, while [player_tooltip player_id='1263292' first='Elijah' last='Bell'] and Jed Rogers will lead on the DL. [player_tooltip player_id='1253958' first='Elijah' last='Huggins'] is a true burner, and should see time at several spots. Broome has the state's No. 1-ranked 2026 player in RB [player_tooltip player_id='473001' first='Jaylen' last='McGill'], and he is as-advertised. Both leading receivers are back as well, as Grayson Bradley and Tresean Suber return. Broome's defense will be led in part by a pair of rising juniors, [player_tooltip player_id='1592026' first='Tyqwon' last='Booker'] and Asher Littlejohn.
